The Fall of the House of Usher uses its landscape and the architecture of the house to bring an eerie atmosphere to the work. Edgar Allan Poe often uses a degraded and torn apart landscape to reflect the plotline of his work. Responding to Roderick Usher’s call, the narrator approaches the house and feels a “sense of insufferable gloom”(308) as he stares at the Usher mansion. This feeling of unrest in the narrator is caused by the state of the surroundings and the same eeriness will be reflected later on in the story.
