This short story describes the interactions between a narrator and the last remaining member of the House of Usher, Roderick. Answering Roderick Usher’s call the narrator starts noticing supernatural signs that something in the house and its surrounding area is infested with evil. Romanticism is used to add depth to the landscape of the work by tying in aspects of the supernatural.

Responding to Roderick Usher’s call, the narrator approaches the house and feels a “sense of insufferable gloom”(308) as he stares at the Usher mansion. This feeling of unrest in the narrator is caused by the state of the surroundings and the same eeriness will be reflected later on in the story.
