Gothic Literature refers to a style of writing that is characterized by fear, horror, death, and gloom, and also has romantic elements such as nature, individuality, and very high emotional plots. Edgar Allan Poe’s “Fall of the house of usher” is a good example because it employs examples of fear and gloom in the setting of the story and an overall sense of horror throughout its events. For example, in Poe’s story, the narrator describes the opening scene as, “ ... A singularly dreary tract of country” (13). He is describing Usher’s mansion to be a very dreary, uneasy and dark place due to its look and vibes he got from it compared to when he went there as a child.
