Thesis statement: Of course green consumerism helps the world greatly against pollution, degradation, destruction of natural resources and global warming, however the false promise of such consumerism will lead to their vast spreading, and increase in their affective power.
I. The first and most important solution to such problem is the necessary decrease of consumerism in general, which is a very effective solution against these global problems.
II. The amount of pollution that is caused due to excessive consuming of various products in hazardous ways is reaching, if it hasn’t reached yet, a very dangerous level that will affect all of the world’s population negatively.
III. Since using eco friendly products or green products will not reduce consumerism, it is the responsibility of all the individuals to take matter into their own hands and change their actions as consumers.
The False Promise of Green Consumerism
“Green consumerism refers to recycling, purchasing and using eco-friendly products that minimize damage to the environment. This involves decisions such as using Energy Start appliances that consume less power, buying hybrid cars that emit less carbon dioxide, using solar and wind power to generate electricity and buying locally grown vegetables and fruits.”

Many various companies, businesses and industries are willing to join in this green movement in order to help in saving the environment of the planet and reduce the problems it faces. However many may argue that these corporations are involving themselves in the movement seeking to gain from the growing consumer demand for greener ways. Whatever the reason that is behind this involvement it will only serve for a better cause.
Of course green consumerism helps the world greatly against pollution, degradation, destruction of natural resources and global warming, however the false promise of such consumerism will lead to their vast spreading, and increase in their affective power.
The first and most important solution to such problem is the necessary decrease of consumerism in general, which is a very effective solution against these global problems.
There should be an ethical limit of personal consumption as terrestrial resources, though enormous, are not limit less. People should be informed of the situation that they are in. There are whole islands of plastic bottles and caps in the Atlantic, holes in the ozone layers as large as continents and as tall as the Everest because of consumerism. We have completely forgotten with what little we can live healthily and peacefully because of consumerism.

If consumerism were taken more seriously a large percentage of the total amount of waste that was generated in 2011 (50 thousand tons) could have been save and therefore saving nature bit by bit.
Since using eco friendly products or green products will not reduce consumerism, it is the responsibility of all the individuals to take matter into their own hands and change their actions as consumers. And that is by not buying any unnecessary products while being fully aware that these actions are essential for the saving of the world.
Of course other actions must also be implemented even after purchasing the necessary products and that is to recycle. This is crucial for maintaining the progress of the project. Recycling is a major step as well for the preservation of the earth. Furthermore it is an even greater step to find a way to recycle the products that are currently not undergoing this process.

It is important to understand that it is the peoples’ understanding of the situation that the environment is in that forces them to control their actions and therefore help in restoring the balance to save nature. It should be clear that consumerism is the greatest threat in the world to the world. The false promise of consumerism should be worked upon as well in order to stop it.
All the solutions that are found should be implemented for our own sake. No one wants to be late to save the natural environment. Our life depends on it.

Environments around the world suffers from various devastating problems such as littering, pollution, overpopulation, climate changes and many more. Individuals try to find ways to solve these types of issues. But are the individuals’ (consumers) solutions to environmental problems reliable? The answer to this is specified in the article called, “Individualization: Plant a Tree, Buy a Bike, Save the World?” written by Michael F. Maniates. Maniates, in his article, argues that individuals (consumers) believe that buying products that are labeled “green” is a great way to help our planet, while it is actually harming the environment. This proves that even Maniates does not favor the individuals’ (consumers) solutions to environmental problems.…

What are you doing to help our environment? Are you recycling because it positively impacts the environment, or are you recycling because it is trendy? According to Alex Williams essay, “Buying into the Green Movement,” companies are turning an environmental movement into a fashion statement. Many people are only buying eco-friendly products because television and magazines advertise the movement as a new trend. The eco-friendly fashion statement is actually making consumers buy more, which defeats the purpose of conserving our planet. Although it is important to buy and pay attention to economically efficient products, sometimes less is actually more. The essay argues that many people are not cutting back on their usage of day-to-day items. William’s essay strongly shows his passion about the subject. Williams is able to persuade his audience to consume less through his use of logos by stating facts, using ethos to…

Do you think the way we consume products effects the Earth’s survival? In “The Conundrum of Consumption”, author Alan Thein Durning believes the consumer behavior and the detrimental effects of consumption are destroying the world’s natural environment. Durning discusses that consuming goods has become the way of life. Durning exposes that our appetites to live the American Dream have taken a toll on the earth’s natural environment, and suggests that there are other paths to fulfillment. Durning says we need to address the problem of consumption because it…

When people join the “green” community, are they truly worried about the conservation of the earth or are they trying to fulfill their need to make themselves feel better about themselves through a charitable act? Some people may feel that if they “go green” in one way, like buying energy efficient light bulbs, that they can justify it within themselves to turn around and not “go green” in other areas, like throwing away recyclables because in the end the two acts will balance each other out on the pollution scale. It is like people are using the excuse of safeguarding the environment to purchase their moral superiority against others because they are working to save the environment by buying energy efficient light bulbs even though they have helped to worsen the situation by throwing away recyclables. “Going green” has been turned into a status symbol and is growing into a fad. However, what is going to happen to the environment once the fad fades away? Some people will step up, but there might not be enough to keep up with the damages that others are…

It states “It is undeniable that ways of life are significantly influenced by different social contexts, for this reason the cultural challenge that consumerism poses today must be met with greater resolve, above all in consideration of future generations, who risk having to live in a natural environment that has been pillaged by an excessive and disordered consumerism” (Compendium 360). We cannot simply keep buying things that are unnecessary and thrown them away after a short time. It is not morally right. Future generations are also going to need those same resources we are using up and throwing away without actually using them. The compendium also states “This responsibility gives to consumers the possibility, thanks to the wider circulation of information, of directing the behavior of producers, through preferences — individual and collective — given to the products of certain companies rather than to those of others, taking into account not only the price and quality of what is being purchased but also the presence of correct working conditions in the company as well as the level of protection of the natural environment in which it operates” (Compendium 359).…

As a country, Americans love to shop. Whether in malls, grocery stores, on the Internet, or elsewhere, the culture of buying is deeply ingrained in American culture. Fueled largely by advertising and the current credit system, America’s consumer culture is depleting our planet’s finite natural resources and polluting our environment. Consumerism has instilled in Americans an artificial, ongoing, and insatiable desire for mass-produced and marketed products, and the money with which to buy them, with little regard to their actual usefulness or necessity. This constant desire to acquire more possessions is poisoning the planet, as it can never be sated and thus results in the never-ending exploitation of the Earth’s natural resources, and the resulting pollution. America’s consumer culture is not only wrecking havoc on the Earth, but by virtue of constantly making shoppers think they need new products they had no prior desire to own, is also creating a citizenry of perpetually dissatisfied and discontent consumers.…

What is green? Well, it is a secondary color made from the yellow and blue and can be presented in different tints and shades. Green is also the color of the grass and the leaves on the trees you see every day when you go for a walk in the park. However, in today’s society green has a whole new meaning than just a color. “Going Green” means do whatever that can be done to help the earth become a cleaner and healthier planet for both humans and animals to live on. Because of this Jacquelyn Ottman wrote an article called “We are all green consumers”, anyhow, I do not believe she wrote a valid article. In the article the author used untrustworthy…

I.INTRODUCTION 1.1. Research Background Nowadays, people have become more aware of their environment. They try to slow down the process of global warming in many different ways. One of the efforts to slow down the process of global warming is that now people try to create, produce, and market the environmental-friendly products or, also known as, green products. People who pay attention to green products are called green consumers. According to Rodriguez and Ibeas (2006), “Green consumers” are those who care about the environmental attributes, and are willing to pay a premium for products manufactured in environmental-friendly production processses. As a result, green movement has become trend of consumer behavior. This movement creates the green marketing actions in the business world. Zhang and Zhang (1999) state 2 definitions of green marketing, the first is in the narrow sense and the other in the broad sense. "Green marketing" in the narrow sense means the special way of marketing established on the basis of conventional marketing and targeting on “green goods”. And in the broad sense, "green marketing" means a whole set of ideas, methods and process to realize marketing goals of enterprises. Zhang and Zhang (1999) also state that the driving force behind the green marketing is the market demand of "green consumption" as its core, and the objectives are to spontaneously protect the environment and to promote efficient use of by enterprises. These would be achieved by means of designing, fabricating, packing, selling and recycling "green products". Considering the importance of green marketing and its issues, this study tries to find out the profile of green consumers that are willing to pay more for green product in Indonesia. Empirical study in this area is still considered rare. The previous study of Laroche et al. (2001) identified several…
