Although during this period more than 2 million Vietnamese people starved to death. The reason for this was because of the arrival of the Axis forces with their new policy which demanded poor people to pay more taxes and gave them 90% of all the crops the farmers had harvested. Because of this, the people had to suffer greatly “They go into a long irresistible chain, including the elderly, the children, both men and women trembling in hunger and exhaustion” (VN Express). Poor people were unable to pay off their debt from the government, including crop failure and natural disasters, people had to migrate from one place to another hoping to find food and shelter. One of the facts about the Vietnam’s society is that there is still discrimination between the rich, the average, and the poor. Poor people are being looked down by the rich and the average. Many people think that the only reason why people are poor is that they do not try hard enough to earn a living. In contrary, there are a lot of poor people in Vietnam who willing to work day in day out with low incomes just to be able to send their children to school. The worst thing about our society is that poor children in Vietnam have to drop out of school and start working to help their family “There are many children between the age of 8 to 16 selling lottery tickets from early in the morning until late night every day” (Hays). Children who were abandoned by their parents or live in a poor family have to do everything they could so survive, including selling lottery tickets, begging, and many other jobs. From early in the morning, they will walk from places to places to ask people to buy their tickets when night comes some of them have nowhere to go because they are not able to sell enough tickets to go home. They are afraid that their guardians will harass them if they come back with a lot of tickets in their hand so they sometimes end up sleeping in the park or prepare to get shouted and beaten up by their guardians.
