The Fashion Channel Case
Dana Wheeler, senior vice president of marketing for The Fashion Channel (TFC) must create a strategy which would help deal with the current marketing challenge. Wheeler’s major challenge is to choose an explicit target market in which her team can market towards in order to increase revenues for The Fashion Channel.
The key Point’s of The Fashion Channel case include: 1. Build strong Target Market - In order for TFC to maintain and increase their advertising revenue model they must build a strong target market of “highly valued viewers” who are also appealing to the advertisers. 2. Build positive Positioning- Wheeler needs marketing initiatives to improve consumer interest, awareness and perceived value. 3. Satisfy Customers wants- In order to increase revenues TFC must expand its audience. To do this it must adapt to changes. TFC must change in order to grow while still maintaining the original TFC which current customers love. 4. Create Brand Loyalty – TFC must build an emotional connection with it viewers in order to create the brand loyalty. By building a brand loyalty it is harder for competitors to take them away.
If I were Dana Wheeler I would interpret the consumer and market data by looking at where the majority of the market and their attitude drivers. By combining this data and the results from the survey I would use this data in order to targeting towards the two segments -the Fashionistas and the Shoppers/Planners. By looking at the pooled data I would use the opinions and preferences of the target market and viewers in order to create new t.v. shows which satisfy the needs and wants of theses

    The Fashion Channel (TFC) is a stand-alone cable channel, which was started in 1996. It known to be the only “fashion only” channel, with fashion related content 24/7. The majority audience for TFC was women aged 35-54. TFC had done well in 2006 with revenue of 310 million, way above their expected revenue. But in 2006 more competitors had popped up on the scene and offered fashion related content.     Decision to Be Made The management team for The Fashion Channel (TFC) must decide which customer segment(s) or “cluster” they should target in their new marketing strategy and how they should position TFC to ultimately increase company revenue. When deciding their marketing strategy, TFC must consider how they can increase their share of the market (ratings) versus the increasingly competitive fashion programming on CNN and Lifetime, and if they can maintain or increase TFC’s satisfaction level among the Large Multi-System Operators. According to Dana Wheeler, senior vice president of marketing for TFC, “the two key levers to drive revenue growth would be (1) increased viewership (ratings), and (2) increased advertising pricing.” Therefore, the scenario that The Fashion Channel will implement must increase TV ratings and advertising revenue. Relevant Facts Ratings One of the most important goals of The Fashion Channel’s new marketing plan was to improve their average rating compared to similar programming on CNN and Lifetime. According to Exhibit 1, TFC’s average rating was 1.0 (1.1 million households), while CNN and Lifetime enjoyed average ratings of 4.0 (4.4 million households) and 3.0 (3.3 million households) respectively. A major difference between The Fashion Channel and the other two networks is the time period of their programming. The main purpose of TFC is fashion and therefore programs around fashion 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. CNN and Lifetime, however, serve a larger purpose than fashion, and therefore only present programs dedicated to fashion Monday through Friday from 9-11pm (Lifetime) and Monday through Friday from 8-9pm and Saturday to Sunday from 10-11pm (CNN).
