Do you think that Louise accurately represents a woman of our times? Why or why not? “The Fat Girl” by Andre Dubus is about a girl named Louise. Louise is an overweight girl. When she was nine years old her mother tells her that being fat or overweight is not pretty, when she gets to high school if she’s still overweight that boys will not pay any attention to her. Her mother would make her eat “bare” meals, if she at a potato during dinner she would have to skip dessert. As she got older she would, in public, deprive herself from eating anything that to society or herself considered “unhealthy.” Meanwhile, at night she would eat candy bars such as: Milky Ways, Butterfingers, Almond Joys, and Hersheys.     In this story as well as actual situations, I have heard reasons and “excuses” as to why someone may be overweight. For example, in the story the Mayor of the town says, “I just don’t know a lot about obesity.” Until you realize it, you’re blinded. Then you get to an age where you suddenly say, “Oh, my God! What have I done to myself?” On the one hand, it seems as though the mayor is admitting that at one point in time, she was oblivious to the fact that she was overweight. At the same time, I do not understand how any individual could not be aware of such changes to his or her own body, especially if it is a drastic change. I would have to say that she demonstrates a definite lack of self control, and denial that the problem has or had anything to do with her own actions. By focusing on anything but the root of the issue, this woman may be overlooking the deeper problem of her health actually being in jeopardy. I feel that these types of problems can be solved by individuals simply assuming responsibility that they have a lot to do with their weight gain. They can make better decisions, though they may be hard to follow through with, they can take action to correct their issue.…

    The Fat Girl Andre Dubus Analysis

    In "The Fat Girl," Andre Dubus presents the struggles of Louise, a girl who at age nine begins eating secretly in reaction to her mother closely controlling her food intake to manage her weight gain. In high school, this behavior grows into "…a ritual of deceit and pleasure…" (321) In a passive-aggressive rebellion against her mother's control, and even though Louise is aware that the behavior is "…insular and destructive" (322), she continues with it and hides the behavior from everyone, including her friends Joan and Majorie. Towards the end of college, Louise's closest college friend, Carrie, convinces Louise to go on a diet, which results in Louise losing approximately 70 pounds, then meeting and marrying a man, Richard, who works with her father, shortly after graduating. Then, she gets pregnant a few years later, which leads her back to her previous eating habits and weight gain. After her son's birth, Louise does not regain control of her eating habits (or seemingly even attempt to do so) and increasingly reverts to her previous physical and mental state, which frustrates and angers her husband, as illustrated by his comments: "I don't want to touch you. Why should I? Have you looked at yourself?"(328) Also, pleadings such as "I'll help you … I'll eat what you eat"(329). In the end, Louise is reconciled with her body and desires, knowing it will just be a matter of time before her resignation drives her husband…

    The New Woman was conveyed through the artists illustrations beginning in the 1880’s and continuing through the years, ending in the 1920’s. These images such as the works titled, “What Are We Coming To”, “In a Twentieth Century Club”, “Picturesque America”, and “Women Bachelors In New York”, all conveyed this idea of a “New Woman”.
