The Fat Girl's Guide To Life Quote Analysis
In the book, The Fat Girl’s Guide to Life by Wendy Shanker the first few chapters begin with a quote. I find this interesting because there is no introduction to this quote and really no explanation, not when the quotes is stated at least. Each quote used through out this book fits well with context that Shanker is writing about, and her opinion on life as a “big” girl. There are very few ties to what the book is about and why she chose the quotes she did or how she wants the reader to perceive the quote before starting the text. Based on what I have Learned thus far and reading chapter three in the book They Say / I Say, I would give more of an explanation as to why I chose the quotes I did and how I want the reader to perceive the quote in

In a flashback, Eric and Ellerby pick Sarah up from the hospital, then Virgil Byrnes drives by but doesn’t see it’s Sarah or Eric, even when Ellerby honks at him, Eric thinks that once Virgil finds out Sarah left, “the stakes to this game would go up” (203). In the present, during Sarah’s first day in CAT class, the topic is abortion and Mautz is there, while Mark rambles on about his point of view towards abortion. Barbara Kingsolver uses hyperbole to demonstrate the realities of life. Taylor is looking for a job and happens to see a HELP WANTED sign at a restaurant. She asks a lady about how the pay is and how it is like working their. As Taylor mentions the baby she is left with, the lady said she knows a place where the babies can be watched because she had a kid of her own. “I had thought Pittman was the only place on earth where people started having babies before they learned their multiplication tables” (Kingsolver, ch. 3). Taylor exaggerates to prove how every women in Pittman has a kid as early as elementary school. She uses hyperbole to clarify how women have children early, and end up not getting education and hustling to make money. Any place…

The author uses Samneric to symbolize the innocence still left in the boys after being isolated from society for so long. Samneric quote, “Hullo, fancy meeting you Ralph. The bus driver for the town of Sam Dent, Dolores Driscoll, seems very nice and caring, but there are definitely many examples throughout the first chapter that show her to be quite goofy. First of all, a lot of the things she says and the phrases that she uses are very out there and do not seem to make a whole lot of sense. In the second paragraph on page eleven Dolores says, “Doreen was a Pomeroy from Lake Placid, a sweet little ding-a-ling of a girl”. On page 31 paragraph two Dolores also says, “...and it scared the bejesus out of me, although I could not for the life of me tell you why”. These two sentences make her seem a little loony because the things she says are so unique, and even I rarely ever her people use those phrases. This is just one example of how the author portrays Dolores to be just a bit nutty.…

The meaning of Graff & Birkenstein's book title They Say I Say is successfully explained in the first chapter. However, every single person that is asked what the title means will have a different reply because not one person will interpret the title in the same exact way. I understood that the title was a structure for writing and that it is important to have your own views in your writing depending on the type of paper which is the " I Say". Also its important to realize not everyone will not agree with your views so you should be considerate of others views which is the "They Say". I also think the title means you need to fully understand what you are writing about and all the perspectives people take on that view. I believe this title has…

When thinking of how Jim defines happiness, I think that Antonia would disagree with this quote,”…to be dissolved into something complete and great, When it comes to one, it comes as naturally as sleep.” Throughout the book Antonia is ready to do everything right then at that time, and she doesn’t have the patience to wait on the good things to happen. Antonia is always ready to work and learn something new, but she lacks the patience to learn and to make sure she does it the right way. What Jim was saying is that, happiness comes at the right time, and that you cannot try to force it. The quote, “and I did not want to be anything more. I was entirely happy.” “Jim was glad that he felt like this in the hard times.” Also, another quote to…

Henry Ward Beecher was quite wise in saying that, “Greatness lies, not in being strong, but in the right using of strength; and strength is not used rightly when it serves only to carry a man above his fellows for his own solitary glory. He is the greatest whose strength carries up the most hearts by the attraction of his own”. In other words, in order to be great, you do not need to be powerful; you just need to know how to use your power appropriately. This quote is valid since strength accomplishes greatness when everyone benefits, rather than just an individual. This phenomenon is illustrated in the novel Lord of the Flies, by William Golding where the characters, in their own ways,…

It’s a sin to kill a mockingbird; a theme repeated often in this title. It means that taking away someone’s innocence or faith in life is bad, and prejudice can do just that. The disease of prejudice and how it makes some people act can kill someone’s innocence, Jem at one point loses all faith in the world and forms cynical views on life (304). Although having innocence is good, because of prejudice, because of hate, because of ignorance, one can lose faith in the world and start to realize that not everyone is as good as you think. While some choose to take this and progress with life or stand still is completely up to the person (304, 331). This title, To kill a mockingbird, fully embraces the idea of human nature and innocence, in the trial, Tom-an innocent man is still prejudiced against an ignorant jury despite not doing a thing. As he is going upcourt, he probably realizes that he wasn’t going to win the case and runs for it during the exercise time, the police shoot and killed him, (315) a completely innocent man, who did nothing wrong-killed. The police, in a sense, killed a mockingbird. All of the characters who have done nothing wrong like Scout, Jem, Tom, Boo, etc...have been affected by the disease of prejudice one way or another.…
