He was so interested in obtaining a normal occlusion it led him to getting more involved with it and later decided to just focus on orthodontics. Saying that, he came up with the development of Angles classifications of malocclusion in the 1890’s. Class 3 of malocclusion would most commonly be known as an under bite where your top teeth completely cover up your bottom teeth. Without all of these classes of malocclusion you wouldn’t be able to classify your teeth and take action of how to take care of them. With this discovery, Edward Angle taught at various schools. From 1892 to 1898, he was the professor of orthodontics at the Marion Sims College of Medicine. After that, from 1897 to 1899, he taught at the Washington University Medical department. Edward Angle is widely known for his classifications and is what made him famous and the “Father of Modern Orthodontics”. All the colleges were so interested in his classifications that the colleges invited him to be a professor and teach his concepts. He has a book just with all his classifications and how to identify what malocclusion you have. He was the first person to drop his leaning of general dentistry and specialize in orthodontics. Overall, Edward Angle was the first to come up with the different classifications of malocclusions and the first to specialize in this study.
