the fault in our stars persuasive
Okay? Okay.
General Purpose: to persuade
Specific Statement: I will persuade my COM 100 audience to read the book, The Fault in Our Stars before is comes out in theatres on June 6, 2014
I. Introduction/Attention Getter
A. You have 10 days, until June 6th. Go to the store buy yourself some Kleenex, read the book, laugh a little, attack the tissue box a lot and then watch it on the big screen. In a little over a week, the new motion picture based on the #1 selling fiction book of 2012 according to TIME magazine, is being released. This is The Fault in Our Stars.
B. Every person in this room has their own story, each one of them unique however sometimes that story gets too chaotic, unorganized, stressful, or overwhelming. At this point what you need is to take a break from your story and dive into the story of someone else. To learn from their mistakes, experience the things they do and begin to understand things for yourself that maybe hadn’t made sense to you before. You need something relatable, something easy to read and captivating, you need to read all 318 pages of the Fault in Our Stars by John Green.
C. First let me tell you about this incredible book and don’t worry I will not spoil it for you! The main character is Hazel Grace, 16, has been battling thyroid cancer since age 13, and only through the use of an experimental drug is she still alive. She carries an oxygen tank with her everywhere, and hasn 't attended traditional school since her diagnosis. Depressed and lonely, she tries a support group, where she meets the handsome Augustus Waters, a 17-year-old dreamboat who quickly proceeds to turn her life into an adventure. Their infinite journey within their limited time has everyone talking so read the book to find out why.
D. I have read this book and can assure you that you will love it, after all it does have a 97% satisfaction rate on goodreads.com. Getting lost in the characters of this book have helped me understand topics such as death that were really scary for me to even think about.
Transition: John Green has a very simple way of laying these complicated topics so that they make sense to us.
II. Need Steps/Satisfaction Steps
A. The Fault in Our Stars has become a social phenomenon. In an article titled, Top 10 Books in Social Media written by Clare Swanson, published on April 4, 2014 in pulisherweekly.com, TFIOS was ranked #1. It has taken over tumblr and twitter and with the movie coming out so soon, it is the center of many conversations. In order to understand what all the fuss is about you need to read the book.
B. This is not just a book for girls, in the same article by Clare Swanson, it states that about 40% of comments made about the book online were written by men, not falling far behind from the 60% of women who are raving about this book. Besides boys, you might be worried that you are running out of time to ask out that girl you’ve been crushing on. It wouldn’t hurt to have something in common already, and taking her out on June 6th to watch the movie would be an ideal date, trust me.
C. This book perfectly encompasses our three greatest factors as humans, life, love, and death. We all know that we won’t live forever but don’t seem to believe it or we would all appreciate life so much more. As Hazel Grace says in the beginning of the Fault in Our Stars by John Green, "There are infinite numbers between 0 and 1. There 's .1 and .12 and .112 and an infinite collection of others. Of course, there is a bigger infinite set of numbers between 0 and 2, or between 0 and a million. Some infinities are bigger than other infinities.” You need to read this book in order to realize that your life is not infinite and that living in the moment and making the limited time we have on this planet seem infinite is so important.
Transition: This book has taught and inspired so many people, you deserve to feel the same emotions that I have felt when reading this book. It will not only be a great experience but it might even change your mind on recreational reading.
III. Visualization Aids
A. Unfortunately we do not always know what we have until it’s gone, this book will completely change your perspective on so many things. Its reviews say so much about it.
Transition: All I want for you to do is read this book, give yourself a break from whatever is taking over your life at the moment and experience this story for yourself. Do not wait and watch it in theatres, let yourself have the full experience, it will not let you down.
IV. Conclusion/ Attention Step
A. Summer is coming up and chances are you will have more free time than usual, pick up TFIOS and give it a read. Being able to have a different perspective on life and clarity in areas that were a bit confusing before can only be good for you. Please make this investment for yourself and read the Fault in our Stars.
Thank you.

Everyone has a person, or persons, who influence their writing in some way. Deborah Brandt, professor in the Department of English at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, wrote an article defining the sponsors of literacy. She states a literacy sponsor as, “people, institutions, and circumstances that both make it possible for a person to become literate and shape the way the person actually acquires literacy”(Brandt 331). The movie Finding Forrester greatly expresses the way in which literacy sponsors can shape someone’s life. The main character in the movie is a sixteen-year-old boy named Jamal who is from the Bronx in New York. He is a very intelligent young man and a gifted writer. The fact that he goes to a poor school with students who are mostly unsuccessful affects the showmanship of his intelligence. He feels that if he shows how smart he is than he will be made fun of. After taking a test his superb scores gave him the opportunity to get a full ride scholarship to a prestigious prep school called Mailor-Callow where he can continue to play basketball. Throughout his journey he has many literacy sponsors. Some of his main sponsors are his family, his friends, William Forrester, and his English teacher Mr. Crawford.…

Presented in the book entitled Catcher in the Rye, Holden Caulfield rebels against what life has to offer. Symbolized throughout the book, Holden shows his many dislikes towards the normal actions of a human being. The normal things that take place in society seem to irate Holden. Stated in chapter two, Holden says “People always think something’s all true.” Holden is explaining his frustration of the lack of education towards things people say and do. Holden tends to see the bigger picture, and the smaller details. Also stated in chapter two of Catcher in the Rye, Holden states “People never notice anything.” This also shows Holden’s great attention to detail. Holden notices the little things; he notices the little girl, later on in the book, that is having…

If you think about it, many other people have a different society than others. These societies have positive attributes and negative ones as well. In the novel “The Outsiders” by S.E. Hinton, the clip “On the Road: Middle School Football” with Steve Hartman; the poem “The World Is Not a Pleasant Place to Be” by Nikki Giovanni, it gives us positive information about Ponyboy’s society, Keith’s society; the society described in the poem. And knowing how their society is positive might change the way you think forever.…

    4. At this part of The Catcher In the Rye, Holden is talking to Phoebe about his possible future careers, however his choice in career reflects Holden's affinity for all things innocent and his will to a protector of them. Holden remembers a part of a Robert Burns poem incorrectly as "if a body catch a body coming through the rye" this causes him to imagine himself saving children by "catch[ing] them" before they "go over the cliff." Ironically, the poem itself is about casual sex, yet Holden interprets it differently in a much more innocent manner. He believes that someone must save the children before they fall off the cliff. The children represent innocence and Holden wants to save the children before they fall off the cliff and enter into the pit of adulthood and a world full of phonies. As Holden himself struggles with realizing his own future, he does not realize that he also wants to be saved from the…

Imagine finding a dog in some alley. There's no way it can help itself and nothing anybody else could do to help it. It's justifiable to kill that poor thing that is otherwise going to die a slow and painful death. In the book Of Mice and Men by: John Steinbeck, the characters had quite a similar view. All of themes agrees as a group to finally put Candy’s dog out of it's misery. And the same thing goes for George with finally ending the life of his dear partner, Lennie. One of the only reason to justify killing a living thing is if that thing can no longer create happiness for itself.…

Have you ever encountered a situation that dealt with race? I think everyone has in some way or form. Maybe someone of a different race was treated unfairly just because they're a different color. Or someone could have been given special privileges because of their race and the law is that they're innocent until proven guilty. Well in this case Tom Robinson in being convicted of a crime he did not commit. Mayella Ewell has sent Tom to trial. During the trial, the town people, family members, and friends show prejudice toward Atticus for defending Tom and toward Tom for just being an African-American. Tom Robinson is being misjudged and mistreated only because he's black.…
