The Fire
The Fire “Is this a dream?” I thought to myself. Looking off into the vast emptiness, the only thing surrounding me was darkness. It was a cold October night; all was hushed except for the gentle breeze sweeping through the trees whispering my name. The chillness of the stale air gave me shivers from head to toe and at that moment I felt unsafe. Suddenly, I spotted a glowing light off in the distance, and knowing it was my only chance of safety I ran towards it. As I approached this mysterious object, I discovered the light was a roaring fire that shined as bright as the sun with big and beautiful flames surrounding it. This welcoming fire brought me light and warmth. The flames burned deep red and amber, almost livid purple. The fire danced to the sound of the wind; flames were floating up in the air trying to catch something else on fire, and finding nothing but air, disappearing into the windy night. I stood entranced, stunned by the illumination and soon discovered there was an absence in light, realizing that the fire was starting to ebb. As I was running around in a panic, I could hear the autumn leaves crunch under my feet with every step I took. I looked desperately for anything to keep the fire alive, but sadly I found nothing except for twigs. Disappointed I turned back and suddenly saw it; looking below the trees I found a neatly stacked pile of split wood, almost like the fire was expecting me. As I fed it timber, the fire grew brighter and crackled with a loud gun like sound almost like it was angry at the wood. It was at that moment when I felt the warmth we shared and knew I would never forget that feeling. The warmth of the fire held me close, almost like it was cradling me in its imaginary arms. I could feel the blazing fire engulf my body and all of a sudden we became one. Even though the fire could not talk, I could sense the burning sensation it felt. I so badly wanted to reach out and touch the flames, but knew that it would burn me. I put aside the negative thoughts, and without hesitation I stuck my finger in the fire. My skin sizzled and my body was filled with pain, but I knew that the fire and I were even closer than before. I sat there listening to the fire and smelled burning leaves along with pine trees. The heat of the fire made me tired, and I laid my head down to rest. Just as I was about to close my eyes and let the fire hold me forever, I noticed its warmth and light was starting to fade away. As the last flame struggled to stay illume a gust of wind destroyed it and took away the light and warmth it possessed. Standing there in the dark, I had lost my hope and felt unsafe once again. All I could hear was the echo of my own thoughts; I felt stone cold without the fire. I could feel my scar burning and knew the fire was still with me. When I was about to give up, I unexpectedly opened my eyes to find out it was just a dream.

Once he steps into the ice and gets his feet wet, the real war between man and Nature begins. The text is called “To Build a Fire” after all. I just sat on a horse. Unexpectedly, the horse started to run very fast, I was terrified so I began to scream, shout loudly and called for help. But, nobody came to help, and surprisingly no less than a minute I started to like it, as the horse ran longer and faster, I noticed nobody and nothing around but the sound of the wind. I closed my eyes, heard pleasant blowing of the wind, at the same time felt great happiness which I have never felt before. Suddenly, I opened my eyes and there were no horse, no wind and no green grasses around me, though that enjoyment was left and I was still elated for no reason. So I got up, opened the window, as the window was opened fresh air broke into my room. I took another stream of fresh air into my lungs and started observing the view. Although I used to see the dawn every day, I had never noticed its beauty. Everything looked flawless to me that very morning. The reddish light appeared in the barely blue sky. As soon as the reddish rays extended to more space, the blue color of the sky became more accurate. Favorable sounds of the nature were heard from everywhere. Along with these sounds I witnessed silence and peace. This peace stretched to my inner world and freed it from all the worries and troubles for tomorrow. There were just me and my heart, and I was ready to hear it easily and clearly.…
