The story of America is the story of white imperialism. After the Civil War Radical Republicans set out to punish and colonize southern states. The North wished to create a satellite region, isolated politically but raped for its Negro votes and economic value. Steamrolling through southern politics with the help of Negros, scallywags and carpetbaggers, Radical Republicans instigated drastic economic change, as well as a political revolution caused by northern occupation in the south.…
The Watchmen and The Tales of the Black Freighter interweave to form a complete narrative, revealing character motivations, thoughts, and likely conclusions. The Watchmen is a work rich with symbolism, social themes, and thought provoking concepts. The Tales of the Black Freighter is a comic within the comic, and tackles similarly profound topics. Adrian Veidt from the Watchmen, known as his superhero name Ozymandias, was an industrialist genius who used his unique talents to build an empire. Veidt was a renowned celebrity known for his intelligence, handsomeness, elegance, business savvy, and his past career as a masked vigilante. The mariner was a pirate attack survivor from The Tales of the Black Freighter who only wanted to save his family. Both men desired to save their home, Earth and Davidstown respectively, and were willing to do whatever was necessary. Though superficially different, the journey of the mariner closely follows the path of Adrian Veidt. Both men experience very similar opposition and struggles, culminating in an all too similar conclusion.…
In traditional hard-boiled American detective fiction there are many themes that seem to transcend all novels. One of those themes is the concept of power and the role in which it plays in the interaction and development of characters. More specifically, the role of women within the novels can be scrutinized to better understand the power they hold over the other characters, their own lives and the direction of the story. Dashiell Hammett’s The Maltese Falcon exemplifies the varying ways in which female characters attempt to obtain and utilize power in hopes of influencing, manipulating and succeeding.…
In the film “The untouchables” directed by Brian De Palma, It’s a very inaccurate portrayal of real life events. The screen writers twisted the truth to make for a more entertaining storyline and overall more appealing movie. Characters in the film are somewhat made up and also depicted in different ways to make them seem better or worse.…
Discuss the ways in which Citizen Kane challenged the traditional narrative and technical elements of classic Hollywood cinema. Give specific examples using appropriate cinematic terminology.…
Racism has been around since the beginning of time. Basically if you had a skin tone darker than the shade of white, you were inferior. Times have now changed, but there are remnants of this subject everywhere, even in film. The movie Birth of a Nation is considered one of the greatest films of all time, even with these themes. AMC’s Filmsite even has it listed within the 100 Greatest Films of All Time. Another movie with the some of the same themes is Blazing Saddles. Blazing Saddles does not have the same stature as Birth of a Nation, but it does deserve to be higher in the canon. I do believe that Blazing Saddles does not have the same stature because it is a comedy with crude humor and because it has a black sheriff as the protagonist.…
In today’s society, it is very easy to have you identity stolen. Unfortunately for David Webb, he has an imposter going under his forgotten murdering persona’s name, Jason Bourne. He is forced by the government to track down his imposter and expunge him. The title of the novel, “The Bourne Supremacy” is applicable to the plot of the story.…
The “Patriot” takes place in South Carolina in 1776 during the Revolutionary War. It is a story about a widowed father of seven, named Benjamin Martin. Benjamin was involved in the French and Indian War before marrying and starting a family. He is reluctant to join the conflict as he remembers too well his own experience in the earlier French and Indian War. After his wife passed away he does everything to keep his family together and away from war. He is a patriot who wants no part in a war with Britain.…

In Canada, we are privileged to have a lot of rights that benefit us. In the movie, V for Vendetta they are not as fortunate as we are. There are many examples to prove that they didn’t have many rights as we do.…
The first similarity is that she can manipulate almost every weapon. Watching movies or cartoons, she uses various kinds of cool weapons, and I also use various weapons or characters in the games like her. That is the one of the reasons why I like her most in CAPTAIN AMERICA: Civil War.…
The movie A Civil Action is focused on describing and explaining what really goes on in a court of law. The case the movie deals with is a small firm going after a national corporation in order to get them to apologize for what they did to the city’s water. It is believed that the company would dump harmful waste such as trichloroethylene into the back of their site where the company was located into a small running river. However, the river was connected to the city’s water wells and caused harm to many children that drank the water. The way each lawsuit is handled can be related to a sociological perspective. The Marxist approach can best explain the process and outcome of the case in A Civil Action.…
“Voilà! In view, a humble vaudevillian veteran, cast vicariously as both victim and villain by the vicissitudes of Fate. This visage, no mere veneer of vanity, is a vestige of the vox populi, now vacant, vanished. However, this valorous visitation of a by-gone vexation, stands vivified and has vowed to vanquish these venal and virulent vermin van-guarding vice and vouchsafing the violently vicious and voracious violation of volition. The only verdict is vengeance; a vendetta, held as a votive, not in vain, for the value and veracity of such shall one day vindicate the vigilant and the virtuous. Verily, this vichyssoise of verbiage veers most verbose so let me simply add that it's my very good honor to meet you and you may call me V” (V for Vendetta). Poetic and heroic is the hero of this epic. What is an epic? An epic is usually a long narrative on an immense or serious topic, and centered on a hero whose actions alter the fate of a large group like a nation. V for Vendetta, a story of a single man who tries to shape this history of a nation threw what some would call terrorist actions. To others this man would be a liberator. This story was written as a graphic novel, yet I purpose a different look at it. This work should be looked at as epic literature for three reasons, it fits the definition of an epic, it has a great epic hero, and this novel, because of technology can better reach our young people’s interest for learning.…
The Patriot movie has been a great movie. All the scenes were incredible and others were devastating. Having to watch this history movie has become one of my favorite movies with the scenes that I have chosen. My first scene I chose was actually a very sad part of the movie. It was when Benjamins 2nd oldest son was shot by one of the British cruel leaders. He was killed because he was trying to free his oldest son Gabriel and was shot instead. After that, Benjamin became upset because the British leader ended up ordering to kill the wounded American’s and burned his house down. He got his sons, the guns and went after them to get his oldest son. They ended up killing all the soldiers and made sure they all died and ended up freeing his son from getting executed. The reaction I got from this part of the movie was very shocking that they would kill a kid and burn down a whole house. It’s also shocking that they were allowed to do all that. What I liked about it though was that he went after his son and did not care about what he had to do, he just had to decide it and go after it.…
This classic hero was done good in this modern rendition of a very old storyline. Steve Rogers, a sickly young man turned super soldier, who wanted nothing more than to fight alongside his fellow Americans, and childhood best friend, captured the hearts of action and comic book lovers. In a perfect combonation of writing and direction, the movie ensures that the viewer falls in love with Steve Rogers before they made him into a true hero. I particularly enjoyed Steve’s character growth out of simply the good for the sake of good trope that's assigned to so many righteous characters, as they progressed his storyline and he learned more about the realities of such a brutal…
