In 1187, Saladin, who is considered as the hero of Islam took over Jerusalem after 90 years of conflicts. After hearing about the news, Pope Urban II died from a heart attack on October 19th, 1187. On October 29th, 1187, Pope Gregory VIII proposed the third crusade to have Jerusalem back. Frederick I, Holy Roman Emperor of Germany, King Philip II of France, and King Richard I of England accepted the proposal and formed the third Crusades with their forces. Frederick I died from drowning while crossing the river and only little amount of his soldiers went with the rest of the crusades. Phillip II, after winning back Acre hurried back to his country saying he has done his job, but secretly he was planning on invading English lands in France while King Richard wasn’t in England so King Richard I was the only one left and the crusades eventually became the “Richard Crusades”. After around one year of war with Saladin, King Richard I realized having Jerusalem back wouldn't last long and be taken away by the Islam again so decides to ask for a ceasefire with a precondition; Christians having the freedom to go to Jerusalem for pilgrimage reasons.
