The First Days Of School The Effective Teacher Video Summary
The Effective Teacher Video In the video, The First Days of School: The Effective Teacher, Harry Wong tells us that the most important attribute to helping children learn is classroom management (Harry K. Wong Publications, 1995). I agree with what Wong said. A student will not be able to learn if there is no management in the classroom. Even if the student really wants to learn, they will not be able to if the teacher is not able to control their classroom. Wong gives a few ideas in this video of how to have good classroom management. In the video, Wong suggests to greet students at the door, give students assigned seats, and to have an assignment on the board for the students to start when they come into your classroom (Harry K. Wong Publications, 1995). Wong (1995) says that by doing these things, the students are on task by the time the bell rings and you do not have …show more content…

Wong explains in his video that simple things some teachers brush off can make all the difference to the kids. First time teachers make the most mistakes on the first day, such as a seating chart. Wong suggests that it saves time and helps keep the students calm. You can have fun with your seating chart especially with primary students. You might want to have fun old maid cards, one is taped to the desk, one you give to the student to find their desk. This makes it easy and fun for the teachers and students. Wong makes a great point that assignments should always be posted before the students walk in. I think that makes an effective teacher because they are prepared and ready to go. Students need structure in a classroom to succeed.…

I believe that if students are in a safe and nurturing environment, then learning can take place. I think my mentor’s classroom management is effective. My mentor teacher had her students make their own “Social Contract”. She gathered the students on the rug and they created their own contract. Some of the rules the students created were treating others with respect and follow all classroom rules. After they created the contract they all signed their names at the bottom of the contract. The teacher posted…
