“Things have to change” this quote was said by Bobby from the book “The First Part Last”. The first part last is a book by Angela Johnson, it is about a teenager named Bobby and how his girlfriend, Nia, is pregnant and he tells about his life with his daughter, Feather, and his life with Nia. The chapters go from now, then, now, then; his life with Feather is in the now chapters, and his life with Nia is in the then chapters. In the book Bobby has to leave his childhood behind and he has to mature in order to be the father Feather needs.
The first thing to remember is on pages 22, 23, and 24. It is when Bobby was going to play basketball with his friends and he almost forgot Feather. “ I lay my basketball down and it rolled out the door into the hall towards Mary’s room, and I almost got to the corner.” The basketball represents Bobby's childhood, and how it is going to his mom. This shows that he is maturing.

In the end of the book Nia is in an irreversible vegetative coma, so Bobby had to make the decision by himself and he decided to keep his little Feather. While he was talking to the social worker, she was just saying what she thought she should say. She was talking about the family who wanted her and how they would care for her and love her until Bobby said “... but I love her”. This shows that Bobby has matured, because he is only 16 years old and is determined to raise his daughter. When he was little, a man named Frank, Just Frank, would ask Bobby if he was a man and now Bobby is a man because of that one simple action. Bobby said that Just Frank would be proud of him because he became a
