The Five Love Languages Gary Chapman Summary
In 2002, prior to getting married my wife and I went to pre-marriage counseling with the pastor that married us. One of the books he assigned to us to read was “The Five Love Languages,” by Gary Chapman. At that time, I was introduced to the five love languages and how they work in a relationship. At times, I feel as though my wife needs all five love languages, but she actually has two. My wife’s love languages are Words of Affirmation and Acts of Service. Many times, my wife will say “tell me that you love me” or “how come you don’t tell me you love me more”. She needs and wants words of affirmation. My wife loves to be complimented, appreciated, and have nice things said to her. With those words of affirmation, she

The language of love is a unique communication method everyone knows. It is not limited to only one part of the world or just on one continent. Love is everywhere. This universal code can be shared with others no matter their creed, language, or nationality which sometimes hinders our ability to form close bonds. Borders and bodies of water help create separation in the human race. Truman Capote’s quote, “Love, having no geography, knows no boundaries,” stresses the unity and harmony in which all people should live by.…

In the musical Hamilton, the character Angelica Schuyler recognizes it as a “fundamental truth” that she is “a girl in a world where [her] only job is to marry rich.” The story took place in the latter quarter of the 1700s but even nearly a century later, those societal standards had failed to change. In his poetic sequence Modern Love, George Meredith paints a scathing picture of “modern love,” critiquing it as a facade belying the fact that marriages contained little real love in his time and were, more properly, societally obligated inescapable contracts that brought misery to husbands and wives alike through their frequent pairing of people, not according to compatibility, but according to social and economic necessity.…

In her novel Beloved, Toni Morrison explores the paradoxical nature of love both as a dangerous presence that promises suffering and a life-giving force that gives the strength to proceed; through the experiences of the run-away slave Sethe. The dangerous aspect of love is revealed through the comments of Paul D and Ella regarding the motherly love of Sethe towards her children. Sethe's deep attachment to her children is deemed dangerous due to their social environment which evidently promises that the loved one of a slave will be hurt. On the other hand, love is portrayed as a sustaining force that allows Sethe to move on with her life. All the devastating experiences Sethe endures do not matter due to the fact that she must live for her children. Although dangerous, Sethe's love finally emerges as the prevalent force that allows her to leave the past behind and move on with her life.…

Description of the house follows, very high ceilings, old mansion it seems, with chimney stains, it has been let go. Mother claims hate is sin, that it spreads throughout your body like black ink in water. Next paragraph jumps to older narrator, discussing her name, Euphemia, how they called her Phemie at home, but when she started to work she called herself Fame (hated her real name), dialogue between her and a bar guest, which is where she worked, at a bar in a hotel. Shows the type of place and type of people she converses with on a regular basis. After that the next paragraph jumps back to 1947 when Euphemia was 12 (so she was born in 1935), she was helping her mother paper the downstairs bedroom because her mother sister Beryl was coming to visit. Love has been described in many ways throughout Christian theology and given different definitions by many theologists, but C.S. Lewis made his own claim as to what he believes love really is. Lewis believed that love was not as simple as many theologians have put it. He believed that love was split into four different types, and that to understand love is to know these four types. Storge, Phileo, Eros, and Agape are the four types of loves Lewis speaks about. To be able to break down the subtle love between characters in his fictional novels, we must first have a firm grasp as to what Lewis really means when he uses the word love or shows love in a variety of situations.…
