Short Assignment #2 (The Fountain)
It is not only that religion plays an essential role in the filming industry, but also filming industry playing an important role in religion. Aside from the fact the movies can entertain, educate, promote political agendas, and present life. They also have the ability to shape the people’s values, norms, attitudes, and perceptions in life (Torry and Flesher n.p.). There are films that specifically deal with a religious theme, particularly Buddhism. The movie entitled The Fountain is one of the movies that depict at least one concept of Buddhism. These three timelines simply depict the story of a man in pursuit of eternity with his love one from different time zones – past, present, and future. It is a story about a doctor living in the 21st century named Tom Creo, a soldier living in the 16th century, and an explorer living in the future who is losing Izzi, their wife, due to cancer and inquisition, respectively. The intervention between the three representational stories focuses on the concept of a mythical tree of life, which is said to provide immortality to everyone who drinks its sap. Tom Creo plays as a conquistador who is set out in order to look for the legendary fountain of youth that has the ability to save his queen against inquisition. The next allegorical timeline finds Tom Creo as a modern-day scientist who struggles with mortality. He is desperately searching for a revolutionary discovery in the field of medicine that will save the life of his wife, Izzi, against cancer. The last and most abstract allegorical timeline present in the movie is when Tom Creo plays as an astronaut having a journey through a deep space in a starship together with the tree of life that sprout out in the grave of Izzy. This is also the time wherein Tom relives magical moments with Izzy in a lotus position. It seems that Creo has a different incarnation, but with the same character and the idea of looking for an eternal life. Izzy serves as a spiritual teacher to Tom, who teaches him that he is missing the love right beside him and pushing the river in order to achieve the miracle of
