As a region with ambiguous boundary distributions, Alsace-Lorraine had created conflict between the two countries of France and German, establishing controversy as to whether the country would come under whose control after the Franco-Prussian War when the region was ceded to Prussia. While newly united Germans felt they knew better what is good for them and forced its ethnic identity on the Alsace-Lorraine people, France, in recovery, and its nationalistic aspiration was devastated by the war; and within the region itself, conflictions became inevitable due to the fact that a portion of the population rejected Germanization and held sentiment toward France, and the others were impressed and took pride in lining up with the German states.…

Franco-Dutch War, commonly referred to simply as the Dutch War, was a conflict in which France attacked the Spanish Netherlands (1), a territory in the Low Countries controlled by Spain (2). In 1670, England and France signed the Treaty of Dover, uniting them against the Dutch (1). When French forces under Louis XIV invaded the Netherlands, Dutch armies flooded vast portions of the country by opening the dikes, impeding French movement. William III of Orange, the Dutch monarch, oversaw the naval defense of key Dutch regions. Sweden united with France in gaining territory in the Spanish Netherlands and on the Rhine River. With assistance from Spain, the Holy Roman Empire, and Lorraine, the Dutch successfully resisted further French advancement.…

Wars are large and complicated affairs. The first word war was the product of many, many things. Although the war officially began on July 28th, 1914, it had been building up for a while. The beginning of the war was much like a domino affect. It started when Austria-Hungary declared war on Serbia. On July 29, Russia ordered a mobilization only against Austria-Hungary in support of Serbia. The Germans threatened war on July 31 if the Russians did not demobilize. France then mobilized. On August 1, Germany declared war on Russia, and two days later, on France. The German invasion of Belgium to attack France, which violated Belgium's official neutrality, prompted Britain to declare war on Germany. World War I had begun. Nationalism, militarism, and imperialism all prompted the rivalry between nations which led to WWI.…

That war caused Russia to start mobilizing its troops and Germany saw that as a threat. They decided that they would use their Schlieffen plan and would attack first France and then Russia. This then caused all of the other nations to go to war and start the World War. In The Century of Total War by Raymond Aron tells of how Germany was the main source of starting the war. “The rise of Germany, whose supremacy France dreaded and whose navy menaced England” had become the cause of the war. This explains why Germany and their army and supremacy helped to start tensions and the war.…

When war began in the summer of 1914 both Germany and France had distinct ideas about how war should proceed. Germany, being the initiator of conflict, had the advantage of putting its ‘Schlieffen Plan' into action first. The plan called for a large-scale invasion of France with a large proportion of the German army moving into France through Belgium. Paramount to the German plan was speed. In order for Germany to be able to invade Russia without worrying about France, Germany needed to defeat the French in a matter of weeks. Due to a number of unforeseen factors, the German plan failed and led directly to the deadlocked situation that would continue for over four years.…

France in the 19th century was a country that was in trouble. In the beginning of the century its people were picking up the pieces from overthrowing a powerful and well established monarch. The people had to weather a failed first republic and the Napoleonic Wars. French people then had to deal with a restoration of the monarchy and a return of the power to the Bourgeoisie. Living as a common person in France was no easy task. While slavery no longer existed legally, its basic principles were still practiced over the peasants by the powerful Bourgeoisie. In the novel The Life of a Simple Man the protagonist is a peasant man named Tiennon. The story is a fictional account of life of a peasant in 19th century France. Tiennon lives through most of these historical events but most of them had no real effect on his day to day life. The one event that truly affected all peasants was the second empire of Napoleon III and his war against Prussia in 1870.…

The concept of the ‘hereditary enmity’ between France and Germany has deep historical roots, which starts from the very beginning up to 1945. Although, their relationship starts earlier, the period of the ‘hereditary enmity’ is considered to be the days of the intense hatred and wars between France and Germany. It is mostly from the times of the Franco-Prussian War from 1870 – 1871, the war between the Napoleon Empire and the German state, which tried to reach the European hegemony. Formally, the war was started by Napoleon III, despite the fact that the main prerequisite of the Franco-Prussian war was the provocation of the first Prussian chancellor – Otto von Bismarck, who was one of the initiators of the partial unification of Germany, while some of the German leaders and foreign authorities were against. German nationalists believed that unification of Germany would help to replace France as the dominant power in the…
