The Freedom Schooner Amistad
The Amistad was a ship that made its way across the Atlantic Ocean to Cuba in 1839. It carried more than fifty slaves in inhumane conditions, but on July 2, the slaves freed themselves and rebelled. The captive’s journey is a story of rebellion, human rights, and the "unquenchable human spirit of the world.” (paragraph 11) The Freedom Schooner Amistad is a modern model of the Amistad.
Just because they have similar names does not mean that the two ships are the same. One significant difference is the fact that the Amistad had about fifty captive slaves on board headed for Cuba. The only people aboard the Freedom Schooner Amistad are seven college students from Britain and the United States. The purpose of the students journey is to study

    In the1960’s, Latin America was experiencing another revolutionary time in it’s history. The theory of Marxism was steadily growing and Latin American literature began to rise in prominence globally. Miguel Barnet, a writer of that time, sought out 103- year-old Esteban Montejo, an African man born into slavery in Cuba, to interview him about his past life experiences. From those experiences came “Biography of a Runaway Slave, ” an autobiographical account of Montejo’s life. From his first memories of the obscurities of nature to laboring endlessly while describing life on a sugar plantation he runs away from for a life in the woods where he feels free until the abolition of slavery arises saying he is free, soon realizing he’s not, he finds purpose.     In this synthesis I will discuss the quotes from Yaeger, Soto, Fanon, and Davis. Both Yaeger’s and Soto’s quotations parallel one another in a way in which the laborer is dehumanized. The slave or laborer no longer has an identity to him or her, but is instead just a faceless human who performs labor-intensive duties to provide for him or herself or to the family. Yaeger describes the slaves in the triangular trade just as flesh, not an actual human being, therefore accentuating the loss in the sense of identity to each slave. The “flesh” on the slave ship is nothing more than just an object that can be overworked and thrown out once it no longer functions. The white-man/owners do not care for this loss because there is an excess of the supply of slaves coming in from West Africa.     Few documentary sources exist from the Caribbean islands and the Latin American mainland written by Africans or their descendants that describe their life under enslavement. In Brazil, two mulatto abolitionists wrote sketchy descriptions of their personal experiences, and one autobiography of a black man was published before emancipation. In contrast, several thousand slave narratives and eight full-length autobiographies were published in the United States before the outbreak of the Civil War (1860-1865) (Conrad, p. xix). In Cuba, one slave narrative appeared in the nineteenth century. Penned by Juan Francisco Manzano, the Autobiografia (written in 1835, published in England in 1840, and in Cuba in 1937) recounted the life of an enslaved black who learned how to read and write. The Autobiografia concludes with Manzano's escape from his owner. The book inspired other authors to condemn the institution of slavery as it existed in Cuba. Not until publication of Miguel Barnet's The Autobiography of a Runaway Slave in 1966 did there exist a narrative centered on the life of a common slave in Cuba (Barnet, 1966). The testimony of Esteban Montejo has been described by its foremost interpreter as "the first personal and detailed account of a Maroon [escaped] slave in Cuban and Spanish American literature and a valuable document to historians and students of slavery" (Luis, p. 200). This essay will explore how testimonial literature can help us better to understand past events.
