Throughout the book, Reuven shows that his maturity continues to grow strong. While Reuven could have rejected Danny’s apology, his father’s advice of friendship, and the option to lead his people, he chose to accept all three. Importantly, Reuven’s father influences Reuven in many ways. Proverbs 1: 8-9 says, “Hear, my son, your father's instruction, and forsake not your mother's teaching, for they are a graceful garland for your head and pendants for your neck.” The advice Reuven’s father gives him helps him mature. Reuven’s father taught him to forgive, to make friends and to study the Jewish teachings faithfully. Even though Danny follows Hasidism, Reuven puts aside his anger to become his friend. Reuven’s Father tells him, “‘The Talmud says a person should do two things for himself. One is to acquire a teacher. Do you remember the other?’ ‘Choose a friend,’ I said. ‘Yes’” (74). Danny and Reuven acknowledge that even though they come from two different religious sects, they can still be amazing friends. On the whole, his friendliness to Danny shows the growth of his maturity. Importantly, his friendship to Danny becomes the beginning of a new journey and understanding of the world. Overall, Reuven begins in a friendship with a Hasidic Jew whose religion differs from his
