The Funny Side of the Filipino: Good or Bad
Ben John A. Alaba May 26, 2015

“The Funny in the Filipino” The article that I’ve chosen to take a good critical opinion is entitled ‘The Funny in the Filipino’ from Rapler.com by Lilio Carreon Jr. I chose this type of issue because it is very apt and timely which is straightforward to the reality of all Filipinos nowadays. In this commentary, it gives you an idea about how Filipinos are trying to getaway the callous reality through humor. There are a lot of entertainers here in our country and even if we don’t say it audibly, we love watching them crack a joke for example Vice Ganda because it redirects us from polluted topics. Everyone seeks a good outlook in life everyday & everyone is just trying to be optimistic and it is not weird. No one in this world is problem –free, who hasn’t encounter a single problem, rich or poor, beautiful or ugly, religious or not, every individual has its own detailed conflicts in life. We can’t deny the fact that we are a happy race, at certain circumstance, we laugh when we are happy and we laugh when we are sad. “It takes just a bit of nudging our funny bones to make us laugh (Leodini, 2011).” We are known be the world as a nation with happy people and this is one of the advantages why many foreigners choose to go to the Philippines because aside from beautiful places, we are welcoming them with friendly faces and attitude. It is something for us to be happy about, but the question is, why do we still suffer and slowly respond to many inevitable different kinds of problems? Instead of putting our interest for being proud as happy flock, let us also not turn back our heads to those awful sides of smiling insignificantly. One of these is when we are called for our earnestness; we developed apathy towards matters. Perfect example would be the ‘Milk Tea incident’ where 2 people were found dead after drinking the milk tea without knowing it contains a poisonous ingredient mixed to it. It became viral when people started scaring each other like, “Give him milk tea!” It means if you want to die instantly just drink milk tea. This is one of the reasons why we are still not the happiest people, it becomes a hindrance to solved major issues to be killed on the roll like poverty, corruption, calamities & many more because we put so much attention to rubbish & frivolous topics. One of the positive sides of being cheerful always is that we gain courage to face the problems. We became braver when we smile. It is proven to be a fact in times of flood/ typhoon scenarios, houses burned into ashes, and people who don’t have stable job but we still have the spirit to continue in life and smile. It’s the material thing that is not available, hope in us is everlasting. We tend to have positive vibes every time so that we can run each day without stress & worrying. On the other half, what really saddens me as a Filipino citizen, we have big problems that we should keep an eye for like the PDAF scam, SAF troopers (Fallen 44) event, and the case of Mary Jane Veloso but we always entertain ourselves with nonsense trending news like celebrities wedding and other funny rumors which most of us put their attention to. It is not that we are not fond of watching news, it’s just that we are switching the menu into the hot plate, the one which is more trending and catches our comical minds. Most of our problems on the list are filled majority with social & political issues. The corruptions by our government officials just evaporate on the scene after many days that we’re not being suspicious and vigilant.
There is no problem with being happy every time, the matter comes when we don’t take serious action in front of many problems. I believed that being religious individuals is a factor why we can stay happy all day. We ask for God’s goodness that He will help us solve our problems that is why we are satisfied in life because we know there is someone up there who can be our best friend to share all the burdens that we are facing. At times, we direct ourselves to those hilarious things which can’t change the world with full of twists and turns. Although it’s not bad facing challenges in life with happiness, we should always discern things when to face painful and witty realities. I would say that somehow we Filipinos are insensitive about the occurrence of matters in our surrounding. Sometimes we turn ourselves to different amusing stories but we should not entertain ourselves to these distractive things that avert us to current important matters. What will just happen if we keep on smiling every phase in life? We will end up arguing to everyone, we will disappear one by one on the stage. At the end of the story, we are the ones who will decide if we will continue to laugh every time we have serious issues to face on. According to the article I’ve read that there is no issue bigger than the Filipino humor. By that, we have drawn ourselves from unsightly and ugly realities. We should not let ourselves sitting in the play, while waiting for those responsible and powerful ones to destroy and whip the problems away that construct and split our society. If we can’t change this attitude rapidly, we will be drowning from many unsolved issues, and because we are a nation, we should accomplish this as soon as possible through the help of each and every one of us. I’ll leave a quote which would summarize everything: Action speaks louder than words!

An organizational structure refers to the way that an organization arranges people and jobs so that its work can be performed and its goals can be met. When a work group is very small and face-to-face communication is frequent, formal structure may be unnecessary, but in a larger organization such as Barnes and Noble, decisions have to be made about the delegation of various tasks. Thus, procedures are established that assign responsibilities for various functions. It is these decisions that determine the organizational structure.…

    Jetblue Case Analysis

JetBlue Airways airline was established by David Neeleman as a low-fare airline with high-quality customer service. His goal was to create an airline that was innovative for the current market. Their main focus was to provide service to areas that were underserved as well as to large cities with overpriced fares. He aimed to establish a strong brand that differentiated itself from its competitors by being a safe, reliable and low cost-airline. Neeleman managed to achieve this partially by hiring friendly, helpful, team-oriented, and customer-focused people. JetBlue is capable of offering low-cost flights due to their low operating costs. In order to achieve the cost advantage, they initially operated a single-type aircraft, the Airbus A320, as opposed to the more popular but costly Boeing 737. Not only was the airbus cheaper to maintain, but it was also more fuel-efficient. Additionally, they decided not to serve any meals on their planes as well as their pilots had to always be available, if needed, to help do the cleanup of the aircraft in order to minimize the time the aircraft was on the ground. They also pioneered the low-cost airline industry by displaying the lowest incidence of delayed, mishandled, or lost bags, and the third-lowest number of customer complaints. Since JetBlue is a customer-oriented company, its objective is to make the customer’s experience extraordinary by providing electronic ticketing and improved in-flight entertainment so that it can rapidly grow as an affordable airline.…

Happiness comes from within. Many people could be living in the same environment and facing the same challenges but some seem to be happier than others. No matter what one’s challenges are, it is one’s choice and decisions to live a happy and content life. There has been an unfounded belief that the rich are happier than the poor but research has given contradicting results. I cannot say that I have lived a happy life but after watching the “Happy” documentary, I am now ready to live positively and happily no matter what circumstances I am facing. I have realized that we make ourselves unhappy by complaining about the problems we face in our day-to-day life rather than appreciating the good side of life. We should focus on the positive aspects of life and try as much as we cannot to let the negative aspects of our lives ruin our happiness.…

Dan Baker and Cameron Stauth 's What Happy People Know is a great book, I would recommend it to anyone to read because, "the same basic principles about happiness apply to virtually everyone, across all age groups, nationality, cultures" (Baker & Stauth, 2003, p. 40). It compares and contrasts what happy people know and do in comparison to what unhappy people know and do. The book teaches the reader how to change their outlook on life from a negative to a positive one. I will begin this report with a brief explanation of what the major underlying factor of unhappiness is. Next, I will briefly talk about the qualities of happiness, according to Baker and Stauth (2003). And lastly, I will reveal just what it is happy people know, also called the happiness tools (Baker & Stauth).…

A Comprehensive Philosophy of Humor: John Morreall What humans find funny is so subjective, thus it is one of the strangest things that humans do. With just a few actions or a few words, our whole demeanor changes and, “…Our diaphragms move up and down in spasms, expelling air from our lungs and making staccato vocal sounds (Morreall, 2). Why do we laugh? What is humor?…

While, humans strive for happiness it is not always obviously shown or even the main goal of a specific culture. Unfortunately, not every country is able to be considered extremely happy like the Danes; who are among the highest ranked nations in the world when it comes to happiness (Wiking, viii). For instance, East Asians have “lower happiness expectations”, then most Americans who are accustomed to smiles and uplifting conversations on a day to day basis…

Around mid-March of 2016, New York’s most popular Spanish-language radio show, El Vacilón de la Mañana, aired a series of jokes ranging from mocking Mexicans who illegally crossed the United States-Mexico border to calling them robbers and prostitutes. These jokes unleashed the outrage of the Mexican community, which staged protests, condemning the jokes as offensive and xenophobic. In an online petition with over 2,200 supporters, Mexicanos Unidos of Nueva York argued that “there is no place for racist speech” targeting Mexicans; the organization believes that Mexicans deserve respect because they are “intellectuals, writers, journalists, homemakers, and educators” who work hard to improve their lives and provide a better future for their…

In response, my parents saved money to allow my family to visit the Philippines every four years. From my growth from childhood to adolescence, making my trip back to the Philippines taught me a lesson every visit. From being unable to be with family in the Philippines as they suffered from illness to seeing the poverty-stricken life of the people in Pampanga, I have developed a deep appreciation of the opportunities I have been…
