The Middle Ages yielded a “veil [that] was woven of faith, illusion, and childish prepossession” which resulted in less evolutionary concepts (Jacob Burchhardt). The lack of innovative behavior caused the Middle Ages to be stuck under this veil. In contrast, Florence, Italy had innovative behavior that “distinguished [itself] from the barbarian” which is evident in terms of the new works that were being performed (Jacob Burchhardt).
