Throughout history, places around the world have traditionally participated in a cycle of ritualized events and festivals. Historically, European life consisted of festivals like Carnival and Mardi Gras, along with common, daily rituals like charivari, or riding the stang. Some festivals kept people happy and allowed them to unwind while others provided order and punishment. Different religious beliefs resulted in different opinions on certain festivals and rituals. Additionally, rituals and festivals helped people to temporarily escape social identities and to shame members of society into following both explicit and implicit laws. Although from the 15th century to the 19th century these festivals and rituals could have been seen as a negative aspect of traditional European life, they were also positive and served a specific purpose during that time period.…

Barbary pirates wrecked havoc on American trade from 1801 to 1815, causing the United States to lose nearly two million dollars in ransoms and bribes. The economy began to sink under the heavy request of the Barbary States, and the young nation became forced to borrow money from other countries in order to sustain itself. The Barbary states marked a collection of nations located in North Africa, which practiced state-supported piracy. These nations included Morocco, Algiers, Tunis, and Tripoli. Barbary pirates began to tax American merchant ships ever since the country first gained its independence, but it was not until 1801 that Thomas Jefferson decided to stop the practice of bribe payments. In 1787, America signed a tribute…

Modern audiences would blame Paris for not courting Juliet, however in Shakespeare's time Paris would have been considered as behaving in a much more proper fashion than Romeo. Private courting between young people, illustrated in Romeo and Juliet, was officially disapproved of. There are many types of love in the two scenes, for example Paris's love. Paris is the man Juliet's parents think is fit for her; however this arranged marriage does not involve love - love was not a feeling, it was a commitment. Another type of love is illustrated in Romeo and Juliet. When Romeo met Juliet, Romeo became more passionate, seen in his language compared with his language about Rosaline. Juliet also became more independent. Their love was so strong they were willing to die for each other, although their families had gone through years of hatred.…

For my event I attended the Black Swamp Arts Festival back in September. This festival was over a whole weekend and it was filled with eclectic styles of art and music. Walking through the festival and seeing the different booths made me feel like I was in a whole new world sometimes. The art was gorgeous, some of it was funny and amusing, and others were moving and were very deep. The musical portion of the weekend is where I found my most memorable events that I believe related to this class in particular. I saw two very different musical performances, one was the modern jazz pair called GINKGOA, and the second was the female mariachi band called MARIACHI FLOR DE TOLOACHE. Both were culturally diverse performances both within the group and…

Francisco Goya’s Disparate de Carnival, also known as the Carnival folly, depicts a circus of disfigured animations with human-like qualities. Regardless of being called a “carnival,” the work seems extremely dreary and very much less lighthearted. This piece was made as a mere reflection of Goya’s depiction of his society. The artist is attempting to expose the monstrous qualities of mankind through the use of anthropomorphic animations.…

The work was subtitled “Grand Zoological Fantasy” and it became Saint-Saens intent to perform it as a surprise at the annual Mardi Gras concert of cellist Charles Lebouc in Paris in February 1886.…

When I was younger, I asked to my grandma that why people eat rice dumplings during the Dragon Boat Festival. She told me about Chinese traditional food and its beginning in our five thousands years old Chinese culture. My grandma said that our ancestors created lots of festivals such as The Spring Festival, The Lantern Festival, The Dragon Boat Festival, Moon Festival. The Dragon Boat Festival was created to commemorate the poet 'quyuan' who jumped into the 'Han river' and committed suicide when he heard that Qin troops finally conquered Chu's capital. We eat moon cake only on the day of the Moon Festival that was created to commemorate a love story between Chang E and Hou Yi. However, they can only meet each other on the 15th day of the eighth month of the year. People celebrate that day and make moon cakes to commemorate the story that wish for the lovers to have a round happy endind like the moon cake. However, even if we eat food in festivals, we eat the most of Chinese traditional food during the Spring Festival. The Spring Festival has a special meaning for Chinese; It is the oldest and most important of all the festivals and tied to the natural year.…
