From 1992 to 1995 one of the largest massacres in the world took place, the Bosnian War. It was an international conflict that took place in Bosnia and Herzegovina. According to Sandro Krkljes, it was said to have killed around 100,000 people. Most of these people were Muslims. They were either killed, raped or sent to concentration camps. "For those who were not killed in the initial massacre, many were sent to one of 381 concentration or detention camps in Bosnia." "Women were often taken to rape camps where they were raped and tortured for weeks and months until they became pregnant. It is estimated that 20,000 rapes occurred between 1992 and 1995 in Bosnia" …show more content…
In 1992, Bosnia-Herzegovina had a population of 4 million people.
This was composed of Bosniak, Bosnian Muslim (44%), Serb (31%), Croat (17%), and Yugoslav (8%). After the war, the Muslim population went down because of their attempt to "cleanse" them "country" of the bad. "who launched a military campaign to secure coveted territory and "cleanse" Bosnia of its Muslim civilian population. The Serbs targeted Bosniak and Croatian civilians in areas under their control, in what has become known as "ethnic cleansing". Out of the 100,00 people that were killed, there was at least 80% Muslims. They finally found peace in
1995.
In 1994, the NATO (North Atlantic treaty Organization) , tried to stop attacks in Bosnian Serbia. In December of 1995 a meeting in Ohio led by the US ended the conflict in Bosnia, a force was made to prevent further damage. "In 1994, NATO initiated air strikes against Bosnian Serbs to stop the attacks. In December 1995, U.S.-led negotiations in Dayton, Ohio (The Dayton Peace Accords) ended the conflict in Bosnia, and a force was created to maintain the ceasefire. Since the end of the conflict, the International Criminal Tribunal for Yugoslavia (ICTY) at The Hague has charged more than 160 persons." Because of this, there are no longer problems of this sort in Bosnia.
To conclude, I can say that not only were blacks discriminated from whites but also Muslims and other people in Yugoslavia of different ethnicities were treated poorly. It is shameful to see how society treats other people because of differences, not only that but how we only pay attention to things that happen here in the US, we completely ignore other countries unless they connect to us.
