The poem is a sonnet, this is clear at first glance because it is constructed of 14 lines. The structure of the sonnet is constructed of octave and sestet. Even if animals and people can be quiet and holy, the existence of both these attributes (quiet and holy) is often seen more in human beings than elsewhere.
The poet uses imagery in line 5 when he says “the gentleness of heaven broods over the sea”. The poet creates the image of how the sky appears to be blending with the sea, he decides to use the word “heaven” instead of the sky and made heavens appear brooding the sea. Now the sky is substituted with the more powerful word “heavens” and made to take an action attributed to hens ( brooding). The poet also creates a powerful massage using both choices of words.
The speaker in this poem does not only uses the poetic words such as beauteous, calm, adoration, and gentleness, but he also uses more religious words. This is evident in words like holy, Nun, adoration, heaven, divine, temple, Abraham’s bosom. The speaker choose the words that are related to religion. These words are used more often and clearly tells us that the speaker is a Christian. The choice of words used by the poet may also trigger the idea that, perhaps the poet is commenting within the context of the appreciation of the Creator. In line 2 and 3the poet selects words ‘Nun’ and ‘sun’. the fact that these two words end with a sound ‘un’ which sound the same whether it is preceded by either a nun or an ‘s’. when reading aloud these two words are noticeable, which captures the reader’s attention. The use of these sound effects at the end of a sentence also brings about the relationship among these two unrelated lines. The previous line was just talking about the time while the following one is talking about the sun. Thereafter to connect the two sentences the poet uses the sound effect of ‘…un’.
