Conquered as a Spanish colony in 1523, Guatemala has been continuously subjected to great adversity. In discussing the colonial experience of this Latin-American nation, it must be known what kind of state it was in at the time it was overcome. From what scientists and historians have gathered, the ancient Maya were the first to settle on the land. They were well developed, advanced, and exceptionally skilled. However, in 1524, their control would be challenged and the course of the land forever changed. Enter Pedro de Alvarado, a Spanish conquistador with a proficient past. Arriving in Guatemala with 120 horsemen, 300 soldiers, and several hundred Mexican auxiliaries, Alvarado began to explore. His expedition met great resistance with a large…

Pride, greed, and vanity. All three of the words I just listed are how Doodle, the sweet special needs boy, was killed by his brother. If you read this story, you will discover that leading up to Doodles death, all of these words are present. The Scarlet Ibis starts out with Brother’s (the narrator) baby brother being born. He is born in his caul, which means he is special. When Doodle is born, it turns out he is disabled with a heart condition. Brother is upset, and even kind of wants to kill him. But, slowly, Doodle begins to get better. He starts smiling and crawling backward, which is how he gets his nickname Doodle. One day, when Doodle is now 5, Brother is embarrassed to have a brother who is getting older and still can not walk. Brother decides to teach him how to walk. Brother is not very careful with Doodle, but he does it and ends up teaching Doodle how to walk. It is a glorious moment since Doodle is now able to be more normal, but he still has to be careful to not overclock his weak…
Using figure 4, it is very apparent to me that Wem needs re-branding. The statement “the town hall is vacant” means that important council meetings can be held so no changes can be decided on. The fact that it is vacant shows a lack of interest in the community, which makes it not a very desirable place to live. The next statement from a local businessperson “Too many shops are shut-it’s like a dying place”, is an example of de-population as there aren’t enough people in the area to spend money locally. This creates a lack of jobs which eventually leads to deprivation. People have a low income and usually poor health and housing conditions, so the younger, more qualified people move to where there are jobs (brain drain).…
