Patterson entered the office where he was told to wait for Sir Beaumont. Sir Beaumont then talked to Patterson and he said that he wanted to industrialize Africa, make it like their country. He also implied that he thought Africans weren’t important and that he only enjoys tormenting the people that work for him. In this scene I saw examples of nationalism, white man's burden, and invest surplus capital. I saw nationalism because they want to expand their country's technology and have land all over the world. Their country is the best and the only way to make it better is to expand it. I saw white man's burden from Sir Beaumont because he feels almost pressured to make Africa “good.” He feels like it is a duty to industrialize their country and does not realize he is taking away the African’s rights. Invest surplus capital came up because SIr Beaumont was investing in the governments railroads and bridges. When he invested in the railroad he was putting his money into the government.
There was a big underlying background about imperialism in The Ghost and the Darkness. I understood the Europeans mindsets and motives for imperialism better after watching this movie. I also noticed more of the African’s side of what they were feeling. It brought up a lot of motives for imperialism, and gave a timeline to all of the events leading up to the takeover of Africa.
