Now to elaborate in the story Kelly immediately felt civil inattention being breached when the young male helped to take her groceries to her room.
The breach of Civil inattention through the Stranger Intervention forced her to put attention on this stranger and try to evaluate the situation. This is where her Psychological signals came in. Kelly couldn't trust this man, but she was puzzled why. She was blinded thinking he was merely a good samaritan. She was trying to ignore her signals and judge by looks. Psychologically she got the signals of mistrust through the time and place this man approached her. After her rape again her psychologically signals came in and she didn’t notice. She knew the young man planned to kill her because he closed the window without thinking about it and she acted on this singals. She allowed her fear to control her and got away
safe.
This is what it is like to be Homeless in College
2. Jumping right into it the document This is what it is like to be Homeless in College by Taylor SJ had a great deal to do with the concept of Status. Status is a socially defined position that people occupy (Week 5 lecture). This document was so much more detailed than only taking the general idea of status. This document greatly had to do with Master Status and Achieved Status. Master Status is your dominant status you are judged off and your Achieved Statuses are obtained from effort (Week 5 lecture). The concept of front is one more concepts I think were important in the document. A front is expressive equipment we use to create impressions (Week 5 Lecture). To put it simpler it's the general thoughts we assume about a person from the things we clearly see and know.
So to put these concepts all into picture for you from the story let me explain how they relate to the story. So Taylor discusses the concept of status by speaking strongly about her being a college student and homeless. She wrote how college student is the general impression people see and knew about her because this was the front that people choose to see about her without getting to know her better. She wrote how she tried to keep being homeless and being a college student seperate which made the illusion of this front of being a regular college student. Due to this front she spoke how people saw her as a college student and didn’t consider to think about other aspects about her making being a college student her master status. She spoke of the many achieved statuses she got as well. Some of these Achieved status mentioned were as follows being college student, worker, girlfriend, apartment owner. These are all different statuses she achieved over time which creates the idea of them all being something that Taylor achieved.
