"The giver" is a novel which was written in 1993 by Lois Lowry. Lois Lowry has written over 20 books and received two awards, one being the Newbery medal for "The giver". The novel was partly inspired by Larry's relationship with her father who was at the time in a nursing home having lost most of his long-term memory. "The giver" is her attempt to criticize reality by creating an ideal society, but we will quickly realize that this idealistic is false.

Jonas starts his training from the old receiver who is called the giver. Joan's training consists of receiving a series of memories of humanity before this community was established when there was colour, love, music and emotions. While Jonas gets to experience lots of good memories like parties', he also deals with bad memories like death and War which changes the way Jonas looks at his world.
He realizes that no one around him has ever felt any real emotions at all and he wishes that he could give that richness and meaning of dreams to the people he loves. Jonas and the giver work out a plan that Jonas will escape to the land outside the communities, so all the memories will spread to the communities which means the people will get back the emotions and choices and the community will change forever. However, Jonas is forced to leave earlier than planned when Gabriel will be released.
