We read The Giver in Literature class. The book left us on a cliff hanger. The ending left off with Jonas and Gabe at a house in the middle of nowhere. The community was also left alone with good and bad memories. As Jonas and Gabe sled down a hill and arrived at a house, they heard music. Both decided to go in. They found out that there was a family, and they were celebrating Christmas. The family was confused at first but decided they wanted to take both Gabe and Jonas to their home. The family was made up of a father, mother, two children (boy and girl around Jonas’ age), and two grandparents. Jonas told of his story and knew he needed to start a new life. People had emotions that they never had before. Many people started to feel love for one another and wanted more.This wanting turned the community into chaos. People began to rally against the Elders and began to flee to Elsewhere. Others stayed, too scared for what the future might hold and waited for someone to save them. Fiona was very scared. She stayed back and tried to survive on her own, collecting scraps of food and barely enough water. Finally, Jonas came and secretly took Fiona back to Elsewhere starting a new life with Jonas and Gabe. This life included happy, cheerful memories with their new family and sad, depressing ones such as death and war. The Giver stayed back at his dwelling. He was so distraught and wanted to save the people, but couldn’t. The Giver became depressed and soon was so sad he committed suicide. The Community did not even noticed because of all the chaos. The one supposed to save the Community had ended his life. The Giver decided he wanted to end up with Rosemary. After Jonas came back to save Fiona, he found The Giver dead and motionless.
