The Giver Sameness Analysis
Imagine a world where everything is the same. No color, no imagination, and worst of all; no memories. How would you make yourself different from others in an all-too utopian society like this one? This is Lois Lowry’s description of life in, “The Giver.” What makes this life terrible is called sameness. Sameness, if it were to be used anywhere, would be detrimental for society or a community because it restricts all forms of creativity, keeps citizens from making their own choices, and prevents citizens from experiencing true feeling. First and foremost, sameness destroy’s all forms of creativity, including music and art. On the other hand, some believe sameness could solve a lot of society’s problems. If everyone were the same,

The American writer, Lois Lowry in her novel, The Giver, claims that in creating a utopian society the creator manufactures a dystopia, since the individuality of a person contradicts the creator’s idea of a utopia. She develops her claim by first creating a utopia where the residents lack individuality conforming to the criteria of sameness, then presenting the absence of intense emotions, then convey the reader’s thoughts of the utopia by placing a main character who gains his emotions and individuality, and finally declares that the utopia lacks morality spawning a dystopia. Lowry’s purpose is to criticize conformity in order to state that to enjoy life one must suffer to appreciate life. She establishes a thoughtful tone for the audience…

The book, ‘The Giver’, by Lois Lowry is a novel depicting a society where standards and rules are everything. Citizens of the community aren’t allowed to pick a single thing on their own: from the clothes they wear, to the assignments (jobs) they will work they rest of their lives. The community has been blindsided for years, and is highly unaware of the the pick-n-choose world they are missing out on. Consider that our current government had announced they were planning on recreating a population just like that. Having a civilization like the one Lois Lowry wrote about become real, would be an alarming concern. The nation that we live in today would no longer be the same. There would be no more deciding for ourselves. Everything would strictly…

    The Giver

The Giver by Lois Lowry is a directive novel about how structured lifestyle could lead to absence of being a true human. In a lifestyle of freedom, people are not mainly subjected to how they should feel and also what to have feelings for. For instance, in a country like United States, as a citizen you have the right to freedom which is stated in its Constitution. In such, there is little to no infringement as to what you choose to believe in or have feelings for. Gustave Flaubert once said ‘the more humanity advances, the more it is degraded’. This novel clearly clarifies the meaning of Flaubert’s quote. In their habitat called the Community, the people have cultivated the concept of “Sameness”. This refers to their beliefs in everything being of the same nature and life. Everyone looks the same with no differentiation between color and race. The only depictions of differences among people were by age or future assignments.…

    * The United States is a melting pot of many cultures, races and ethnicities. I have learned that each group has differences and many similarities. With these differences they have taught me to be tolerant and accepting of them. By embracing the differences through our diverse society, I have learned new concepts of living, new ways to think, and have been introduced to a variety of foods that I have enjoyed. It seems in the end many of the groups that are so different have a common interest which is to love and be happy. It would be beneficial to our society if we would focus on the main interest of all, rather than focusing on how different we are from one another. Focusing on the differences and judging others based on them is something that was done in the past upon realization that closing the opportunity to learn about other cultures was hindering me in life.…

What if people lived in a world where there was no cultures, no religion, no languages, no races, a world where everything was the same? In the futuristic world of the Giver all the people wear graym with the same haircut and no colors. Although some people may claim the world in the fiction novel The Giver by Lois Lowry is a utopia, it is a dystopia because sameness means there is no diversity which takes away from being human. Although sameness solves many of this world’s problems, it is not worth giving up diversity. In the story, as Jonas continues with his training he starts a conversation with The Giver about sameness. The Giver says “It wasn’t practical so it became obsolete when we went sameness. (...) Trucks; buses, slowed them down.…
