Our society and the society in The Giver have many similarities and differences in having children. For example, page 8 paragraph 6 of The Giver states “Two children - one male, one female - to each family unit. It was written very clearly in the rules.” Also on page 22, it says, “Three years. Three births, that’s it. After that they are Laborers for the rest of their adult lives until the day they enter the House of the Old… The Birthmothers never even get to see new children.” This shows the differences between our world and their world, because we have a choice to have as many kids as …show more content…
For example in The book The Giver page 38 paragraph 1 it states “It’s just the pills. You’re ready for the pills, that’s all. That’s the treatment for Stirrings.” .. He knew about the pills. His parents both took them each morning. And some of his friends did, he knew.” This tells you that in their world, they can’t feel any love towards anyone so that means that none of the parents actually have feelings for each other since the pills are preventing it. Stirrings are when you feel affection towards someone which is a huge quality in our society. In addition to this, our parents have been in love before whether they are still together or have gotten divorced. Even in teenage years, some people say that teens don’t actually know what love is as of romantic relationships. While on the other hand in The Giver, once the children become adults or when they get adolescents/ puberty early, they take those pills so that they can’t experience
