The Giver: Summary

In the beginning of The Giver Jonas is about to turn twelve, which is a very big deal in this community. You get an assignment when you turn twelve. He is very worried and has no idea what he will get. This makes him excessively nervous. In the family unit you tell your dreams in the morning and tell your feelings from that day at night. Lily is his younger sister and is very outgoing she can’t wait till her ceremony. The ceremony happens and Jonas is assigned to be the new receiver. The Chief Elder says to Jonas that there will be a lot of pain to come, and a lot of new experiences

In the middle Jonas looks at the folder of the rules and the job description. He starts his training the next day after school he goes to the annex,
or The Receiver headquarters. The older Receiver starts to give Jonas memories from times when the world had color, before climate Control and sameness. Jonas actually felt things, which only him and The older Receiver felt. He began to see beyond. One day the speaker announced that that day was a holiday. So, he went to the other kids playing. He realized what they were playing, war. He remembered the boy laying on the battlefield begging for water, one of the memories he received. He told them to stop but, no one listen to him because they didn’t feel. He started to feel this way a lot, with his sister, parents, and friends. He asked the older Receiver what he should call him he said The Giver.

He wanted to change the way the community was by giving them feelings.
He and The Giver tried but couldn’t think of a good plan. The Giver had been trying to figure out a plan almost his entire time being The Receiver. Jonas kept thinking about a plan to make the community feel. There was a baby released early that morning, a twin. Jonas wanted to watch but for baby releases no one watched. He told The Giver that he wanted to watch it. The Giver asked the speaker to play that morning’s release. He saw his father put the needle into the baby’s forehead. Jonas thought that babies get shots. Then the baby went limp, that is when he realized that a release means that you die there is no elsewhere. He was horrified that his father just killed a baby. He sobbed and just kept sobbing. He didn’t want to go home to his family unit, so The Giver gave instructions to the speaker that Jonas would be staying for extra training. That is when they came up with the plan. The plan was to Jonas to go beyond the communities, with The Giver being so old that he couldn’t keep the memories for much longer, and no one to take Jonas’s place. He would have to give the memories to the community. The next day was a normal day even though Jonas was going over the plan all day in his head. That night Jonas’s father told that Gabriel would be released, Jonas couldn’t let it happen. So when he left he took Gabriel with him. He rode
beyond.
