The Giver: Today's Dystopian Society

Justice is fairness based on the rightness of morals. “The life where nothing was ever unexpected. Or inconvenient. Or unusual. The life without colour, pain, or past.” This quote was written by Lois Lowry in The Giver a 1993 utopian/dystopian novel. The Giver has many similarities and differences with modern society. For instance, The Giver’s dystopian society shares some of the same features of today’s society especially concerning the government. In The Giver, the type of government could be described as big government. Big government is a government perceived as excessively interventionist and intruding into all aspects of the lives of its citizens. On the other hand, the United States government is described as a democratic republic
meaning both a republic and a democracy. But even though The Giver’s society and modern society are governed by different types of government they still share similarities with each other. One example would be how in both societies the government controls more things than people care to realize. Lastly, those are the similarities and differences of The Giver modern society concerning the government.
