The Giving Tree By Shel Silverstein
The first book I read was The Giving Tree by Shel Silverstein. It can be debated that it was more reciting than reading because at the time it was my favorite book, and I had others read it to me as often as possible. I remember thinking the the tree was such a kind and devoted friend, while the boy was a “meanie.” I see now that the tree gave everything away and lost herself in the process. The unhealthy relationship between the tree and the boy led to the tree being abandoned and entirely unhappy, but whenever the boy needs something, the tree is always willing to assist at whatever cost. The beginning of the story begins with the boy and tree in a loving, positive relationship. Together they play hide-and-seek and king of the forest.

    The Gift By Li-Young Lee

Li-Young Lee’s, “The Gift” unquestionably communicates several ideas, some rather direct, and others buried within the rhetoric and composition of the poem. Although the meaning (of the poem) may be left to interpretation, one of the most prominent concepts of the story, in my belief, is the gift of love and consequent tradition of offering it to loved ones. In the beginning of the poem, the narrator describes his father comforting him in the painful situation of removing a metal splinter from his hand: “My father recited a story in a low voice. I watched his lovely face and not the blade.” The father’s calm and affectionate demeanor can be further attested to in the second stanza, “...I recall his hands, two measures of tenderness, he laid…

In “Night” written by Elie Wiesel, Elie struggles with his faith. In the beginning of the book Elie’s faith is pure. When Elie was asked why he prays to god, he responded with, “Why did I pray?... Why did I live? Why did I breathe?”(Wiesel 4) Elie’s faith was unbreakable. His faith was so strong as a result of being in a Jewish family and being taught to pray and study Judaism daily. However his faith was put to the test during the Holocaust. Elie starts to doubt his faith by witnessing the amount of cruelty and evil while in the concentration camps. Elie wonders how a god could let such disgusting and cruel actions take place. He is also disgusted by the selfishness and cruelty he sees amongst his prisoners. Elie describes a scenario…

The Massacre that was held in Boston Massachusetts on March 5, 1770 was a small yet horrific event. It started out as colonist teased and taunted the British soldiers. They also threw rocks and whatever else they could throw at them. The soldiers reacted to this by firing back at the colonist killing five people, three were killed on impact and two died later on, several were wounded. Immediately after, the colonist disappeared and the soldiers reported back to their barracks. Even though we cannot be exact on what happened for sure about what happened that day; some eyewitnesses claim they heard the commander tell the soldiers to load their weapons and fire. Some evidence proves Captain Preston’s innocence of not commanding the soldiers to fire, and that it was done in the heat of the moment (Martin Kelly).…

The message of the Giving tree speaks about an unconditional love of the Tree to the boy. It is a kind of relationship that is sometimes one sided. Sometimes we can relate this story on the virtue of giving and not expecting something in return. Many of our parents give their unconditional love to their children. As sons and daughters, we must be to learn to reciprocate the love our parents. Remember that we too will also become parents and grand parents. Life is a cycle of giving and loving because when we know how to appreciate and grateful then expect that love will also be given to us. This is what the law of karma which is the great law of "cause and effect", of "action and reaction", which controls the destiny of all living entities.…

    The Giving Tree Reflection

One of my earliest memories is that of my twin sister, Lexie, and me sitting on my parents' bed with my father as he read books to us. I can't quite recall the names of most of the stories he read to us because I was so young, but there was one particular book that clearly stands out in my memory. This book was Shel Silverstein's The Giving Tree, a classic children's book about a boy that grows up alongside a tree and continues to take advantage of the tree's love for him by taking its resources throughout his life. I reread this book many times throughout my childhood, and despite me not quite grasping the story's message when I was younger, I eventually realized what the actual moral of the story was as I thought about it more and more as I grew up. Due to this, The Giving Tree was one of the first stories that showed me how meaningful literature can be, which ultimately led to me becoming an avid reader in grade school.…
