Do you ever think that the book presents bigger ideas than what the reader thinks about it. Books can have different means that what you think about the book is really about. The tree and the boy is more than what seem to know about the characters and the book. The tree is like the mom/ parent figure of the boy and the boy is the son/ child of the tree.
