Section 1: A woman on the street
Quote 1: “’You want to help me change my life?’ Mom asked. ‘I’m fine. You’re the one who needs help. Your values are all confused’” (Walls 5).
I think that this quote is significant because it shows how different Jeannette’s views on life and her mother’s views on life are. Throughout the novel Jeannette is always trying to help her parents, but what she does not notice is that they are happy the way that they are. They enjoy the way that they are and have been living, and do not want Jeannette to try and change it. Her mother wants Jeannette to know that life is not all about materialistic things. You do not need money for happiness; all you need is to be happy with what you already have.
Quote 2: “’Just tell the truth,’ Mom said. ‘That’s simple enough’” (Walls 5). A personal connection to this quote is that in high school you learn a lot of different things. One of the most important things that you learn though is to tell the truth, and that lying gets you know where. Be honest about who you are, so people accept the real you. Just like her mom said, telling the truth is actually very simple. You should not be embarrassed of where you come from, and shouldn’t have to lie to get people to like you. Telling the truth is a life lesson, one that sadly very few people learn. Honesty can get you very far in life, and people will actually value your opinion.
Section 2: The desert
Quote 1: "I told Mom that I would protect it from the wind and water it every day so that it could grow nice and tall and straight. Mom frowned at me. 'You'd be destroying what makes it special,' she said. 'It's the Joshua tree's struggle that gives it its beauty'" (Walls 38). This quote is significant because Jeannette is very much like the Joshua tree. She has been through so much, but through struggle comes strength. What never killed her simply made her stronger. There was never really anyone there for any of the kids while
