Black Americans were not given the same opportunities as whites. On December 1, 1955, the bus boycott in Montgomery, Alabama took place. Activist, Rosa Parks gave an act of protest when she refused to give up her seat on a bus to a white man. Not long after this rebellion, she was arrested; but then, bailed out. On November 13, 1956, the Montgomery Bus Boycott was finally resolved after many court orders. Black and white Americans were now both allowed to sit wherever they wanted on busses. “On June 25, 1950, the Korean War began when some 75,000 soldiers from the North Korean People’s Army poured across the 38th parallel, the boundary between the Soviet-backed Democratic People’s Republic of Korea to the north and the pro-Western Republic of Korea to the south.” (http://www.history.com/topics/korean-war). She stared in a quantity of movies such as: “Wait until Dark”, “Robin and Marian”, “Love in the Afternoon”, plus quite a few more. In the early ‘50’s, jazz was a big hit. However, then Rock and Roll came along and was a huge hit. It most popular Rock and Roll singer during this time was Elvis Presley. Elvis was born in Tupelo, Mississippi on January 8, 1935. “Heartbreak Hotel”, his first single was the number-one hit in the U.S. in 1956. He also stared in many films, like, “Jailhouse Rock”. Sadly, Elvis Presley died on August 16, 1977 in Memphis Tennessee due to drug use. A big part of the 1950’s was the fashion! Poodle skirts became popular in the ‘50’s. They were usually a solid, bold color with a black poodle stitched on the front. Girls and women also wore just big skirts and dresses.
