What is the “good life”?
The “good life” is subjective and relative to each human being as we all have different perspectives on what the “good life” is. As we experience life, we come to the understanding of what “good” means at its bases. I was asked whether or not I would cheat to get into university and I had said yes. I had decided that it was a great decision because it meant making my parents happy and helping my community in every form possible, but to my fellow classmates I was wrong. In this situation, both arguments were correct as we all came from different walks of life and different experiences. Since we all have different views on what the “good life” is we can get countless different answers. But if I were to classify the good life, Edward J. Stieglitz explains it perfectly;
The important thing to you is not how many years in your life, but how much life in your years! (The second forty years, Chicago Tribune, 1947) …show more content…
In one word Edward is saying “Live!” and that is how I would classify the “good life”, to see where life takes me, to be able to breathe at every moment and wake up to go to school to get a wonderful education and meet amazing fellow students and staff.
To me, being truly alive is living the good life. Making each day worth getting out of bed and making an impact on society. So that when I do crawl into bed again, I can ponder and realize what a wonderful day it has been. To be able to appreciate the gift of living that God has blessed me with and realize that if I were to wake up the next day, I will try my best to make it better than the previous. That is the good
life.
How does one succeed at living the “good life”? Since the good life varies from person to person, it is not set in stone how living the good life look like. But to answer, asking the question of how it feels should be asked first. Of course living the good life means to be happy, but how does one know that this happiness is what “good life” is all about? Mahatma Gandhi explains this very well; Happiness is when what you think, what you say, and what you do are in harmony.
Indian political and spiritual leader (1869 - 1948)
Gandhi explains that being one with oneself is happiness and it feels to be in perfect harmony with the mind, body and soul. That is what the good life looks and feels like, being in sync with oneself rather than one's surroundings. On many occasions I keep receiving negativity for my dream of getting accepted into Waterloo as my grades are generally not the best, but through a lot of self development, I have come to glimpse the power behind Gandhi’s words. Once you find the inner peace and become aware of your own power and greatness, it doesn’t matter what other people think, because if people don’t accept you for who you truly are then they are not worth being acquainted with. This is the impact living the good life puts on our existence, it makes us more powerful, more confident and more willing to do more things. To conclude, to succeed at living the good life, happiness is key. Through self development and realizing your true potential, when you become happy with yourself it leaves a ripple effect to your surroundings. It is better said than done, but when you have the desire to be the best you can be, you truly do live the good life.
