The Good Life Vs Animal Farm
The novel Animal farm, written by George Orwell, tells the story of animals working on a farm who want to live their own lives, the American film Truman Farm, directed by Peter Weir, explore the story of one man living in a TV show wanting to live his own life. Although these texts are very different in style and story, they both show the positives and negatives of themes like ‘the good life’, the perfect society and justified power, among many others. All while showing the personal views and opinions the authors and directors have on these themes. Not only will we look at the different themes in the book but the similarities and differences between the creators views.
‘The good life’ is something that we are all looking for, but sometimes, we don’t know exactly what that entails. These texts both somewhat follow the stories of characters seeking what they want in life and the writers both show what they believe to be ‘the good life’, even if they are shown in different ways. Although they don’t agree on what makes power good, both texts depict the main power in their respected texts as being the wrong kind. This is shown in Animal Farm when slowly a group of animals assume themselves leaders and take control of the vulnerable animals which Orwell cleverly uses pigs for. Although subtle this points out that the ruling animals were pigs and therefore greedy by not using the power they possessed for the good of other animals. A not so similar leadership is shown in Truman Show through the character Christof. Weir shows Christof taking control of Truman’s life and although Christof justified it in himself, Weir changes that by showing that Truman wasn’t happy.
