The events of the story happen at a ranch in the southern part Junin. The protagonist happens to go to this ranch because his cousin Daniel invited him to go, yet he only said yes because he couldn’t find a good reason to say no. Near the main house the Gutre family lived, they took care of the ranch and they were uneducated. After his cousin had to go back to Buenos Aires a heavy rain began and it did not let up so the protagonist gave the hired hands a room in the main house. This drew them all closer and forced them to cooperate. Since every road to get out of the ranch was underwater Espinosa was forced to stay in the ranch and find something to do. While looking for something to do, Espinosa finds a bible and decides to read to the Gutres so they could have something in common. It was because of the flood and the bible that Espinosa has a tragic ending, because the Gutre took what he said to literary and decided he was like a Christ like figure and ends up crucified like him. So everything was put in place to force Espinosa to stay by itself, his cousin leaving and the flood caused this, and to make him look like a religious figure, the preaching to the illiterate people did this. Maybe if his cousin would have stayed it would have changed something in the story, or simply reading another thing to the Gutres would a changed the
