The Gothic Theme Of Appearance Vs. Reality In Short Stories

The decision I made to choose the gothic theme Appearance vs Reality was the right decision. My decision was the right decision because I was able to relate it to how in life people aren't always the way they seem. Taking this into account, consider the following quote, “‘And I to your long life’”. (Beers et al. 289). Why was this line so terrifying to us, but so insignificant to Fortunato?
My decision was the right decision because it can be applied to life to help you better figure out the intentions of those around you. In the short stories that we read in class the characters who we heard the most about were considered “good people”. No one really had a reason to suspect that the characters were truly the villains in the story. This is sadly true in real life as well. Many of the people in our lives truly care for us, they want us to live good lives and will try to do what they can to help. However there is likely at least one person in your circle of friends who does not. Someone who, for whatever reason, has it out for you. This is where my decision comes in. Appearance vs Reality can be positive when an individual is thought of in a negative way to begin with, but is in fact the opposite. In life the people that we meet, strangers or even people whom we know personally can shock us.
