The Great Depression In John Steinbeck's Of Mice And Men
The Great Depression of Mice and Men

The Great Depression was a time of hardship for everybody especially ranch workers. It prevented people from living the life they desired. Many people lived in poverty switching between jobs. Eventually people, like Lennie and George, began searching for jobs in California, in fact “thousands flocked to California”. People were in search of jobs as migrant workers for fruit and vegetable fields. When there was an opening for one man, there would be at least ten men competing for it. They were willing to work for extremely low wages, even just for food. So it was important for George and Lennie to keep their job in order to earn the money to save up for their farm.
Such a condition where men are trapped and are in terrible economic conditions helps to create an emotional climate where people do not rely on others. It is also the reason why Lennie and George's friendship is so unique, something that strikes everyone that they meet. In a time where so

Besides her husband's jealously, Curley's wife's social status also restricts her freedom. In the 1930's, during the Great Depression, the social status of women was quite low.Men did not take women seriously and the major role of women was to cook, clean, and raise the children. Curley's wife is a perfect example of how women were viewed in the early 20th century. She was treated like property to Curley and was not given a name being referred to only as ‘Curley’s wife’. To conclude, with women having such low social status during the Great depression Steinbeck’s uses this as a main aspect in Curley’s wife’s character to show us how the great depression can cause a person to become emotionally unstable.( ADD

As the only woman on a ranch surrounded by men that view her as a temptress, Curley’s wife faces little to no chance of friendship. Despite Steinbeck’s portrayal, Curley’s wife emerges as a complex character through the quotation, “‘I get lonely’” (82). This declaration to Lennie shows Curley’s wife as more than the stereotypical enchantress, but as an actual person who possesses feelings, particularly loneliness. The line becomes noteworthy as the reader begins to notice the character of Curley’s wife developing more depth and feeling.…

Irrefutably, dreams are a key theme in the novel, and Curley’s wife’s broken dream had been more deliberated than most. She thinks that she “coulda been in the movies, an’ had nice clothes”, but her hopes were entirely unrealistic, she was waiting for a letter that would never arrive, men were only interested in her because she was pretty. Curley’s wife thinks that she had ‘talent’ but in reality the men that spoke to her were only after one thing- and it wasn’t a Hollywood career for her. Pinning her hopes on one dream is very childlike which is precisely what her character is- a young, naive girl who is far too immature to already be married. She left her mum to spite her because she was too naïve to see that her mother was right for not letting her go and now she has no relationship or love with anybody; she is completely segregated in the world. The fact she has no name, and referred to as Curley's property, shows she has no importance amongst the ranch workers but she is actually a complex character who has her own dreams and her poor life quality further provides a hint to the reader that dreams rarely come true and George and Lennie's American Dream will fail as a result of her dream being a failure. Thinking she would be in a better situation if she married the first person she saw turned out to be the biggest mistake of her life and now she is completely trapped even though her life had not even started, she has no friends and no sympathetic ear to listen to her problems and now her dreams can never come true.…

The great depression was unprecedented in its length, the wholesale poverty, and tragedy it inflicted on society. During the great depression there were any migrant farm workers. During this time the work of three hundred men could now be done by five. There was less work and more machinery that could handle the wheat harvesting that taking place. Migrants farm workers earned little money along with food and basic accommodation. At the same time as the great depression, there was six years without rain which caused the ‘dust bowl’. Because of the dust bowl, the farmers in Oklahoma, New Mexico and Kansas had no choices but to sell or forfeit their farms to banks and migrate to fertile lands. Migrant farm workers lived from job to job just like the main characters in the novella, Of Mice And Men. The president Franklin Delano Roosevelt helped alleviate the effects of the great depression when he took over president Hoover. He created domestic reform programs, economic policies, agriculture policies and relief policies that helped end the great…

    * However, like many others they were in that situation due to an end in the American prosperity, as characterised the US through the 20’s. This end came on ‘Black Tuesday’, 29/10/29, when the stock markets crashed and the Great Depression started, as a result of this unemployment rose from 3% in 1929 to 26% five years later, again showing just how lucky George and Lennie were. People were also being put out of work due to the agricultural revolution where machines were replacing a dozen men.…

“Truth is everybody is going to hurt you: you just gotta find the ones worth suffering for” (Bob Marley). The novel Of Mice and Men, by John Steinbeck, was set in the Great depression. In the novel George has to deal with Lenny every single day and it’s not easy, but he loves him and he just has to accept that Lenny is part of his life. In this book, society was frustrating. People were very sexist, and instead of coming together and helping each other everyone kept to themselves this is also known as isolation. Also, during this time people who suffered from mental and physical disabilities were often isolated and faced discrimination. Steinbeck identifies many societal problems during the Great Depression, and brings them to light in his novella Of Mice and Men.…

In 1930s, women social status is in the bottom of the social hierarahy. In this novel, Curley’s wife doesn’t even have a name, which only shows Curley’s name. This suggests that man is way more powerful than woman and a woman has to rely on a man to make a living. Furthermore, Curley’s wife is always looking for excitement or trouble, she always flirts with the workers in the farm. This shows that men in the 1930s think that women are not important and the only purpose of women is to entertain them. Moreover, Curley’s wife had a dream to be a movie star in Hollywood. However, her dream would never came true, because women in 1930s have so rights to choose and men are the only people who can make decisions for women.…

The Great Depression was a time where multiple people lost their jobs and their money in a matter of days. During the beginning of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck,George stated that most unemployed people were “the loneliest guys in the world.”(Steinbeck,13). This quote demonstrates that people usually didn't have anyone by their side and were often left by other people and they had to work for themselves and try to save themselves. As shown in the book,George and Lennie were unemployed people who “...got no family. They don't belong no place…”(Steinbeck,13), and this quote reinforces the idea of isolationism during the Great Depression. Another character named Crooks is someone who doesn’t believe in hope as a result of seeing many people…

Although the majority of novel deals with power as a negative it also highlights the positive. Steinbeck through the character of Curley’s wife shows us the power of the female sexuality and how it can overpower a dominant male. Although Curley’s wife has the power to seduce many men it also leaves her in a venerable position with men who have no respect for her. The theme of companionship…

During the 1900’s, there was a large division between males and females. Women were stereotyped as weak and passive, with little to no freedoms not to mention they were unable to attain work as easily as men. In Of Mice and Men and Flowers for Algernon both Curley’s wife and Fay help further the point that women didn’t have it simple in the 1900’s. Through their levels of loneliness, their mistreatment as women, and their image of only being an object, it is apparent that these women faced many challenges during their existence.…

Women in 1930s America were treated as ‘2nd class’ to the men. They were in charge of household duties, especially when the men went to war. Women did not have the rights the men had, such as: voting and working. A traditional 1930 American woman would usually be owned by their father and passed on to their husband when married. This relates to Curley’s wife because she had no name throughout the novel. This name ‘Curley’s Wife ‘suggest that she was Curley’s possession and did not have freedom to life. Curley’s wife death makes me feel sympathy for her because she is described as ‘’simple, pretty, sweet and young’’. This reminds the reader that she still had many years to live, and all of the pain she has been through for a short amount of time. However, I don’t feel sympathy for her when Steinbeck says that ‘’her reddened lips made her seem alive’’, which reminds the reader that she lived most of her life trying to impress men, to get attention, and it also signifies the importance of it to her.…
