THE GREAT GATSBY
The 1920s change American society, people starts to wear less clothe and automobiles and radio came and made peoples life a lot more effective. During the 1920s their were riches and poor , there were New Money , Old Money , Some Money, and No Money. In the book the Great Gatsby, Fitzgerald did a very good job at describing just how much difference their were between the rich and the poor. There are many scenes in the book that are very comparable to the real time of the 1920s, all can be compared from the way the two different social work , setting , and living style. In the book Fitzgerald give the reader a clear view on Gatsby's wealthy, and Tom too. From my point of view those chracter have very little similarities, on their personalities, social class, and from all those you call reflect it to the real 1920s age where the rich was richer then ever and the poor to the tippy toe. The Rich people during the 1920s was richer then ever, big houses nice cars, had everything they wanted. In the Great Gatsby nick's friends who lived in the East Egg was rich, and the way Fitzgerald describe what the house look like give you a general picture of just how rich they really were. In book it says “Their house was even more elaborate than I expected, a cheerful red and white Georgian Colonial mansion, overlooking the bay. The Lawn started at the beach and ran toward the front door for a quarter of a mile, jumping over sun-dials and brick walks and burning gardens.” from the description you can see they have a very rich living style and the way they decorate their house. The rich have a very different living style comparing to other class people. For example, their parties are very fancy, exotic, and expensive. In the Great Gatsby, when Gatsby himself had a party the way Fitzgerald wrote it like if it was one of the biggest events in the history, “On buffet tables, garnished with glistening hors d'oeuvre, spiced baked hams crowded against salads of harlequin designs and pastry pigs and turkeys bewitched to a dark gold.” During real time of the 1920s ,the Rockefeller family was always paying tax, so they had to open businesses to keep the money flow, such as banks, insurance, and real estate. So the reality and the way how Fitzgerald describe the rich were not quite the same. In the Great Gatsby, Fitzgerald did very good at describing “the roaring twenties”.He used word to describing the years after World War I, He used the setting in his book to reflect the corruption and crim and the time. He used words to the difference between rich and poors, and the high and low social classes. The location that he described shows that money class has very different residential areas.”twenty miles from the city a pair of enormous eggs, identical in contour and separated by a courtesy bay, just out into long island sound. An arresting phenomenon is their dissimilarity in every particualr exept shape and size.”From this quote Fizgerald give us a good example explaining that if you are rich you pretty much have to choice to live far away from the city.Good view , away from trouble and traffic in the city. The narrator nick lives in west which was the less fashionable of the two.”his small eyesore of a house is next to the mansion of mystery man jay Gatsby.” There is a huge difference between the two.During the 20s money was everything, you had the money you make the calls. One of the improtant thing was that Fitzgerald did not just use the setting as a surrounding effect, he used the setting to reveal characters, tells the reader what kind of person they are, and often used the weather to match the tone of a critcial event in the story. The settings in the Great Gatsby are quite accruate to the reality, for example the eggs are for more wealthy people, and the vailly of ashes and new york city are for the more lower class people.

The movie “The Great Gatsby” shows life in the 1920s, but there are some inaccuracies between characteristics of the time period and the movie. Despite these inaccuracies, most of the movie stays true to the time period. It accurately shows the imbalance of power during that time. Although the United States was industrializing, only a select group of people became wealthy. The workers, on the other hand, were dirt poor and had a much lower of standard of living. This contrast can be seen by Gatsby’s life and the life of the workers in the Valley of Ashes. The movie also accurately shows the cultural aspects of the 1920s, for the most part. The attire of the people is accurate. It is full of flapper dresses and gaudy accessories, which is what a normal party outfit consisted of then. It also does a good job of focusing on the music then. Music was a major part of that time period as it was being to emerge more. One inaccuracy was the style of music used. For the movie, they imitated the style of music but they modernized it and changed it to fit in this time period. The city was also incorrect. For the movie, they added many colors and there was always something new to be seen. They added onto the city for the movie to make it seem better and larger than life, when a city during that time period was still exciting but not as over the top. Despite these differences, the movie has many aspects that are accurate to the time period.…

The Roaring Twenties were full of marvels and mysteries; good and bad. The truth in society is unveiled in The Great Gatsby in terms of wealth and The American dream. The rich people in the story are extremely wealthy, and what they say about their backstory may not be what it is in reality. Rich people have easy lives in terms of money, but the middle class and lower class workers must to toil to make ends meet. There are times where it is ugly for the poor, and Fitzgerald makes it clear. The idea that consumer culture and money drove human behaviour and thinking in the 1920s can be put to great contrast. One of the most obvious points being Gatsby’s lavish spending and taste for the exotic, and expensive, yet if you dig deeper you realise all this spending was for him to get Daisy, so really it’s not the money driving him, but love. It can be seen that money and consumer culture dominated behaviour and thinking in The Great Gatsby. I think that this is the case because of Daisy's strong draw towards money, Toms flaunting, Gatsby’s need to please and better himself and Jordan Baker being named after two cars and Nick falling for her, so in effect, falling for the money.…

The 1920’s could be described as “a great time to be rich” in America. It was a time where the rich got richer, and the poor worked to better their lives. It was a time of hope; when people strived to achieve the American dream of money, family, and happiness. The Great Gatsby, written by F. Scott Fitzgerald, attempts to uncover the truth of the American Dream. It follows the experience of Nick Carraway and his meeting with the one and only Jay Gatsby. Gatsby is perceived as one trying to live out the American Dream - a man with great ideals determined to achieve the unachievable. It is through his pursuit of Daisy that Fitzgerald is able to show that the Dream itself is truly indeed unrealistic and corrupted by materialism.…

Correspondingly, Fitzgerald, like all authors, wrote The Great Gatsby for a reason more than just the 1920s life in its splendor. In the book, The Great Gatsby, characters are wealthy seemingly beyond measure. For example, they have cars to take them to the fanciest party in East Egg, and the women can afford to stay home. East Egg stands out in contrast to West Egg with its glamour and excess, but much of that glamour comes with a price. Jewels replaced morality, and money replaced relationships. “My own house was an eyesore, but it was a small eyesore, and it had been overlooked, so I had a view of the water, a partial view of my neighbor’s lawn, and the consoling proximity of millionaires-all for eighty dollars a month. Across the courtesy bay the white palaces of fashionable…

The Gatsby lived in disillusionment about the kind of person he was he wanted to have the wealth and grace of the old money to impress Daisy. “An Oxford man!" He was incredulous. "Like hell he is! He wears a pink suit." "Nevertheless he’s an Oxford man" (Fitzgerald 122). Although Gatsby sees himself as part of the wealthy he lacks the class that the rich see themselves as having, because he cannot buy class. The West and east egg are examples of the difference between the old and new money. “My god i believe the man’s coming’” said Tom. “doesn't he know she doesn't want him”(Fitzgerald 179). Gatsby created a god like persona for himself but although he does have the money to blend into the wealthy East eggers he lacks the knowledge about the snobbish attitudes of the rich.Tom and Daisy grew up with the lifestyles of the rich, they viewed themself as decent people although that was not the case. “They were careless people, Tom and Daisy-they smashed up things and creatures and then retreated back to their money or their vast carelessness, or whatever it was that kept them together, and let other people clean up the mess they had made...”(fitzgerald, 179) Tom and Daisy went around life having the ability to throw money at all there problems which in consequence turned them into carless shallow…

Flashy parties, wild behavior, and endless amounts of bootlegged alcohol; sounds like a great time, huh? In the glamorous era of the 1920’s this was more than just a party, it was a lifestyle. In F. Scott Fitzgerald’s novel, The Great Gatsby, the roaring twenties is a time of carelessness for some that comes as a result of wealth, class, and privilege. Characters such as Tom Buchanan and Jay Gatsby use their money and materialistic items to win over women’s hearts and to fabricate themselves as high class to the rest of society. Wealth class and privilege is not always defined as a positive concept, it brings many negative effects to the characters in Fitzgerald’s novel as well as the outcome of the story.…
