The Great Gatsby
Broken Dreams In F. Scott Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby, the main character, Jay Gatsby lives a very contradicting life style. Jay Gatsby lives a very extravagant lifestyle filled with money, cars, and houses, but he is missing one thing, his love Daisy. Daisy Buchannan is Gatsby’s dream. Gatsby’s only wish is impossible to achieve because what he wishes is to have the relationship with Daisy like he did 5 years ago. Even though Gatsby seemed to have it all he really didn’t. He was missing one thing. Gatsby’s dream was to have Daisy but he didn’t so he filled in that emptiness with personal things to replace her such as money and cars. Gatsby’s effort to get Daisy’s attention was to throw fancy parties in hope he could get her attention. Gatsby was so focused on winning her love, he tried to do the impossible and repeat the past. Jay Gatsby appears to be a successfully rich man on the outside but on the inside lies a man who is unable to achieve his dream. Gatsby is unable to achieve his dream because his dream is what he had 5 years ago with Daisy and he is still trying to chase it. When Gatsby was having a conversation with Tom, Gatsby tells him that it is possible to relive the past. ““Can’t repeat the past?” we cried incredulously. “Why of course you can”” (224) Gatsby is trying to reclaim Daisy’s love that he lost 5 years before so he is trying to win her back. The “Great Gatsby” isn’t so great after all. Gatsby’s life is like a puzzle and if there’s one piece that doesn’t fit in then it’s ruined. That missing piece was Daisy therefore he isn’t so great. Gatsby loves to show off and flaunt his personality, therefore he wants to prove to Nick that he can earn Daisy’s love back, considering the fact that he hasn’t failed to earn something that he’s wanted before. Gatsby is proves that he is unable to move beyond the past and currents of life keep

Since the moment Jay Gatsby met Daisy he fell in love with her unconditionally. They spent wonderful summer nights together. However, it all came to an end when Mr. Gatsby had to leave to war. Daisy was willing to go and say farewell to her beloved in New York. In the end she was not able to go because of her social status. She was rich while Gatsby was not. While Gatsby was in Oxford he received a letter from Daisy saying she was now married to Tom Buchanan. It would seem logical for Gatsbys dream to die off and move on. However, rather than giving up, Gatsby tried to make himself the type of man that Daisy would fall in love with. During the course of five years Gatsby had met a man named Dan Cody. After meeting him that’s where his wealth started. He was now the man he hoped Daisy would want. He now had money and was able to support her lifestyle. His ultimate dream came short when Daisy decided to stay with her husband Tom. Gatsby had a little hope left but his hope for accomplishing his dream ended when he was…

Jay Gatsby’s obsession with his past with Daisy has caused him to act mindlessly throughout this book. Gatsby takes experiences he once had and tries to relive and redo them. This has been true in his copious success, wealth and relationships. His main goal being to “fix everything just the way it was before” with Daisy, is elusive and in this story nearly impossible (Fitzgerald 110). The Great Gatsby teaches a lesson and uses Gatsby’s character as an example that in life, there is no way of recreating the past. It only brings misfortune and misery. Fitzgerald proves that unbridled passion can be blinding and deluding.…

Gatsby’s actions are provoked by money, or Daisy, or a combination of the two. The conquest of these two concepts prove to be shallow. Gatsby’s early life as a poor farmer caused him to hate a life of disadvantage; which lead to his thirst for riches. When he fell for Daisy in Louisville it changed the course of his life. From then on, his ambitions for money and Daisy consumed his life. Previous actions inspired a sense of longing in Gatsby; which caused him to lead a meaningless life and die alone with only his…

The reason why I think this is not correct is because Gatsby has already achieved success he is extremely wealthy and could get whatever he desires. The only thing he cant get is Daisy. Another example of them two rekindling their past was when Daisy hangs out with Tom, Gatsby, Jordan, and her husband on the hottest day ever. This was the worst thing they could have done. During lunch Daisy's husband Tom realizes that Gatsby and his wife are in love and having an affair. Gatsby just stares at Daisy with love eyes, and Daisy right next to Tom, says that she loves Gatsby. On page 122 a lot of stuff goes down Tom sees Gatsby and says “Mr. Gatsby! He put out his broad, flat hand with well-concealed dislike. “ I’m glad to see you, sir…..Nick…..” Right after that Daisy tells Tom to make them drinks and she immediately kisses Gatsby and says on page 123 “You know I love you.” As you can see Gatsby thinks that his dream is coming true and it seems that way but it will soon get shattered when Tom finds…

No matter what the situation, Nick, the narrator of the story always describes Gatsby as having a smile on his face. With his constant smile and overuse of “Ol’ Sport”, very few times in the story do we find Gatsby with a pessimistic attitude. When telling Gatsby that he can’t expect too much of Daisy and that he can’t repeat the past Gatsby replies with, “‘Can’t repeat the past… Why of course you can!’” (Fitzgerald 110). Though faced with almost certain defeat, Gatsby remains hopeful that Daisy will want to relive the past they had together. If this is not a prime example of just how optimistic Gatsby can be then…

After Gatsby tells Nick that Daisy didn’t have much fun at his party Nick replies, “You can’t repeat the past,” which Gatsby confidently replies with, “Can’t repeat the past? Why of course you can!” (110). This exchange is evidence that Gatsby is living in the past and is unable to see that his past has become a fantasy. At this point Gatsby has blown his past image of Daisy into something much larger and more magnificent than she is able to be in reality. Gatsby has twisted his idea of the past so much that he has gained extremely high expectations for his future. Nick’s comment is foreshadowing that Gatsby’s dream to be with Daisy will never be lived out. Along with this, Gatsby’s reply foreshadows his heartbreak and foolish feeling he suffers after realizing that Daisy has left him for…

Gatsby talks to Tom and says “she never loved you [Tom], do you hear?” [Gatsby] cried. She only married you because I was poor and she was tired of waiting for me. It was a terrible mistake, but in her heart she never loved any one except me!” (Fitzgerald 130). Gatsby is trying to justify why he is okay with Daisy marrying Tom instead of him. Gatsby assumes that the only reason Daisy married Tom was for his money and not for who he is as a person. Gatsby has a misconception that if he earns enough money, Daisy will want to be with him. He earns his money by doing illegal bootlegging. Even though Daisy is married and has a child with Tom, Gatsby is still trying to win her over. He’s trying everything he can to interfere with their marriage by telling Daisy “he wanted nothing less of [her] than that she should go to Tom and say: I never loved you...just as if it were five years ago” (109). Gatsby feels like Daisy deserves more than what Tom has to offer, he really does care for Daisy and seems to want the best for her. Gatsby just approaches it the wrong way. His approach produces many conflicts and does not end the way he wanted it to. Gatsby tries to recreate the past because he loved her even before he went to war. He’s thinking that they may still stand a chance to be together because of their slight history together in the past. Gatsby’s getting so carried away with “...his illusion. It had gone beyond her, beyond everything. [Gatsby] had thrown himself into it with a creative passion, adding to it all the time, decking it out...no amount of fire or freshness can challenge what a man will store up in his heart” (170). He has put his whole heart into this so called “relationship” with Daisy. Gatsby tries to reel in the past to show her that he hasn’t changed as a person, where his wealth is the only thing that has changed. He has so much passion in him to try to impress her and do…

He even bought a house across the river from Daisy, his lover, so he could be close to her without her knowing so.
