True love in the 1920s was a hard thing to come by. The way that Fitzgerald portrayed relationships, he was implying that a true friendship and relationship during the 1920s was impossible. This is shown very well in the novel The Great Gatsby by many of the different characters. For example, Daisy and Gatsby fell in love but daisy got married and is now separated from Gatsby. Also, Nick a friend of Gatsby is being constantly used by Gatsby so that he can get closer to his cousin Daisy. Another example of a fake relationship is Tom and Daisy. Lastly, Tom is cheating on Daisy and Daisy is cheating on Tom. This just shows corrupt how people are and that you can’t trust anyone during the 1920s, even if you personally know them.

Daisy Buchanan and Gatsby are to people who once fell in love but their differences split them apart. Gatsby, who is a rich retired military officer met Daisy before he was shipped out to war. They have too many differences for them to be together. He is a soldier and she is a wealthy wife. He is always busy and she has nothing to do all day.Daisy Buchanan who married Tom Buchanan after Gatsby left for war is now part of one of the most wealthy family in the East Egg. Daisy, who once loved Gatsby has now fell for another man. Even though she is cheating on her husband with Gatsby she still has feelings for Tom. When Gatsby asks Daisy to tell Tom that she never loved him she said, “Oh, you want too much!” she cried to Gatsby. “I love you now-isn’t that enough? I can’t help what’s past.” She began to sob helplessly. “I did love him once-but I loved you to.” (Fitzgerald 139). Gatsby is stunned and cannot believe what he just heard. The girl that he loved so much loves another man. Now since Gatsby lives in west egg, there is a different social status. She is old money which is money that has been passed on from generation to generation and Gatsby is new money, he made all of his money through an illegal bootlegging business.

Nick Carraway, the narrator of the novel, moves into east egg because he got a job on wall street. His neighbour who is a wealthy businessman turns out to be James Gatsby. Nick is a little sceptical at first when he moved in but later he was invited to one of his many parties at his castle. This is where he was first introduced to the mysterious man that no one knows about. People were telling him that Gatsby was all of these things that he was not. Even after Nick meets Gatsby he is still unsure about who he really is. Some people say that Gatsby was only friends with nic so that he could get with Daisy. Ask yourself this, why would a rich and successful man become friends with a poor and unsuccessful man. One night, Nick noticed that the, “Lights in his house failed to go on” (Fitzgerald 119). He was unsure what was going on with Gatsby so he asked and found out that Daisy and him were secretly meeting. The relationship between Nick and Gatsby Nick and Gatsby He uses nick to get to daisy Nic does not know who gatsby really is It was a one sided relationship not a true friendship

The way that Fitzgerald portrays relationships in the novel brings up the fact that real friendships/relationship are impossible for ordinary people to have.
