The Great Gatsby Essay

In all human life relationships are very important, and this is shown in many different aspects of human life . Relationships are so significant that Authors often use them as the revolving point of their stories. Such as in The Great Gatsby the author F. Scott Fitzgerald uses the different relationships as the revolving point in his story. Fitzgerald shows how the relationships between the couples in The Great Gatsby are similar in many different ways. The couples in The Great Gatsby are Gatsby and Daisy, Tom and Myrtle, and Myrtle and her husband. Each couple in this play has a dishonest relationship in which one or both are Unfaithful to their significant other.

The relationship between Gatsby and Daisy is one of constant lies, and deceit. Gatsby falls in love with Daisy before he goes to the Army as a young man, and Daisy fell in love with him too. Yet Daisy is very materialistic and Tom, a very rich man came into place and Daisy married him instead of waiting for Gatsby like she had promised. Gatsby waited for Daisy but she did not wait for him, and instead married Tom just for his money. This shows how there relationship has been riddled with lies since the very beginning of the story.

The relationship between Myrtle and her husband is insincere, loveless, and dead. Myrtles husband George, who is lifeless, poor, and often dirty, owns a garage in the valley of ashes. While George is completely devoted to his wife Myrtle, on the other hand myrtle has lost love for her husband, and desires for a more elegant fast pace life. Myrtle tries to find a way to fix the situation between her and her husband, but instead she takes the easy way out and cheats on her husband with Tom a very rich, prominent, and handsome man who gives her everything that she desires, but he is also a married man. This relationship shows how two of the characters cheat on their spouses, and start a

Gatsby and Daisy’s relationship was mainly just a fantasy created by Gatsby. Gatsby imagined this great life that he and Daisy would have together, when in reality, Daisy was married and could not leave her husband. When Gatsby and Daisy did get reunited, their love sparked again, but never took full effect because of Tom. The idea of “fake love” is also seen in George Wilson and Myrtle’s relationship. Although they were married, they did not have a true romantic relationship. George only married Myrtle because he did not try to make a better life for himself. George and Myrtle were on the same economic level and social class: poor. Wilson loved Myrtle to an extent, but he did not have a deep passion for her as Gatsby did for…

    F. Scott Fitzgerald’s novel The Great Gatsby establishes characterization through an intimate relationship between Daisy and Gatsby without ever explicitly discussing about it. When the two became lovers, Gatsby was surprised to discover that "it didn't turn out as he had imagined.” However, he did feel as though they were married after this encounter. This conveys an aspect of how Gatsby fell in love with Daisy’s allure rather than her personality and was blindly obsessed with being with her. Shortly later, the two are split apart for a length of time and end up reuniting after five years. It is suggested that they resume their sexual relationship and their affair is purely physical with no substance behind it. Once again, Gatsby fails to…

This shows that Gatsby loves Daisy so much that he would stay lonely and hopeful for years just for her. Gatsby never gave up hope during the time that they were apart. Tom has an affair on Daisy with Myrtle. This shows that Tom isn’t loyal to Daisy and he doesn’t put any effort into their relationship. The theme that is portrayed throughout The Great Gatsby would be a deviant sense of love. Even though Tom and Daisy may seem somewhat loyal and affectionate towards each other in the beginning, their true feelings begin to show as the novel develops. As we see with their unfaithfulness to each other, they are clearly not in love. Tom begins seeing Myrtle, George’s wife, and Daisy has an affair with Gatsby, her former lover. Ever since Gatsby had laid eyes on Daisy, he’d wanted to be with her which is why he, “bought that house so that Daisy would just be across the bay.” (Fitzgerald.78) It’s largely evident that Gatsby is in love, but with what? With Daisy? Or with a dream of Daisy? He’s always had fantasies about loving Daisy, but now that…

Gatsby talks to Tom and says “she never loved you [Tom], do you hear?” [Gatsby] cried. She only married you because I was poor and she was tired of waiting for me. It was a terrible mistake, but in her heart she never loved any one except me!” (Fitzgerald 130). Gatsby is trying to justify why he is okay with Daisy marrying Tom instead of him. Gatsby assumes that the only reason Daisy married Tom was for his money and not for who he is as a person. Gatsby has a misconception that if he earns enough money, Daisy will want to be with him. He earns his money by doing illegal bootlegging. Even though Daisy is married and has a child with Tom, Gatsby is still trying to win her over. He’s trying everything he can to interfere with their marriage by telling Daisy “he wanted nothing less of [her] than that she should go to Tom and say: I never loved you...just as if it were five years ago” (109). Gatsby feels like Daisy deserves more than what Tom has to offer, he really does care for Daisy and seems to want the best for her. Gatsby just approaches it the wrong way. His approach produces many conflicts and does not end the way he wanted it to. Gatsby tries to recreate the past because he loved her even before he went to war. He’s thinking that they may still stand a chance to be together because of their slight history together in the past. Gatsby’s getting so carried away with “...his illusion. It had gone beyond her, beyond everything. [Gatsby] had thrown himself into it with a creative passion, adding to it all the time, decking it out...no amount of fire or freshness can challenge what a man will store up in his heart” (170). He has put his whole heart into this so called “relationship” with Daisy. Gatsby tries to reel in the past to show her that he hasn’t changed as a person, where his wealth is the only thing that has changed. He has so much passion in him to try to impress her and do…

His ego gets in the way because he thinks he is victorious by assuming that Daisy only loves him. When in reality she loves both Gatsby and Tom, and Gatsby can’t accept that. Gatsby values his past relationship with Daisy more than anything in the world and dedicates the rest of his life to returning to it, but once Gatsby leaves for war, there is no real hope of their relationship ever going back to the way it was. Gatsby has loved Daisy since they first met, as is clear from Jordan’s story, where she says, “The officer {Gatsby} looked at Daisy while she was speaking, in a way that every young girl wants to be looked at some time, and because it seemed romantic to me I have remembered the incident ever since,” (page 75). Gatsby’s love for Daisy is evident to the reader from the way Jordan describes the way he looks at her. Despite this obvious love, their relationship is bound to end badly, especially when Gatsby leaves for war. Before Gatsby comes into Daisy’s life, “All day long the telephone rang in her house and excited young officers from Camp Taylor demanded the privilege of monopolizing her that night,” (page 74). Gatsby’s absence stimulates numerous men to attempt to form a romantic relationship with Daisy, making it increasingly difficult for her to stay faithful to Gatsby. Eventually, she marries Tom Buchanan while Gatsby is still in France fighting in the war. According to Jordan, “I thought I’d never seen a girl so mad about her husband,” (page 76). Despite Daisy and Gatsby’s meaningful relationship, Daisy moved on and married a man with whom she is, according to Jordan’s story, happy. Gatsby decides to fixate his life on this seemingly perfect past relationship, but fails to…

There was only one major thing in Gatsby’s eyes that would jeopardize his perfect plan for him and Daisy. That one thing that stood in the way was what Gatsby wanted to believe was Daisy’s fake love for Tom. So he wanted her to admit that she always loved Gatsby and never loved Tom. “I did love him once- but I loved you too” (Fitzgerald 132). In order for his plan to work perfectly he wanted Daisy to tell Tom she never loved him at all. But Gatsby seemed more upset by the confession of Daisy than the fact that Daisy is actually married to…

For my book report project I chose to do a graffiti wall for the book The Great Gatsby. I made a brick wall out of red poster board and drawn on lines for the bricks. I chose five words that I thought related to the book and spray painted them onto the wall to create a graffiti look. The five words I chose are party, dream, love, eyes, and death. Here are the reasons why I chose each of these individual words:…

After years of burying his feelings and waiting, he explodes in a rampage of rage and jealousy. Gatsby hates how his dream is being crushed because of this, something so cruel to him. In Gatsby’s eyes, Daisy’s love for him was being ripped away by Tom Buchanan. Gatsby genuinely thinks that Tom Buchanan is the reason Dasy doesn't love him the way he loves her, and that's how he snaps. “She only married you because I was poor and she was tired of waiting for me. It was a terrible mistake, but in her heart she never loved anyone except for me!” (Fitzgerald 137). After the years that Gatsby labored saving his money, he thought that Daisy would wait for him. He believed that she would stay, because their love was pure. Daisy did not wait. She could not wait that long, and so she eventually just married Tom Buchanan. She married Tom not for love but for greed. Gatsby eventually realizes that the dream he had was never going to come true, and he is so incredibly jealous of the life Tom has with his Daisy. Gatsby just wanted to be perfect, to be content in his own little world. That is not how things work out for Gatsby, however. Things only seem to crumble even…

In chapter 3 of The Great Gatsby Nick is invited to one of Gatsby’s extravagant parties. He arrives only to find he doesn’t know where Gatsby is, and then he runs into Jordan Baker. Together they set off to find Gatsby and they head to the library where they find “Owl Eyes”, a drunken man trying to get sober. After talking to “Owl Eyes” for awhile they head outside again where Nick unknowingly starts a conversation with Gatsby. After revealing himself, Gatsby tells Jordan that he would like to speak to her privately. Later “Owl Eyes” drives his car into a ditch and the chapter ends with Nick describing his life in New York and driving in a car with Jordan. The quote that best describes Jordan Baker is, “Let’s get out…this is much too polite for me” (45). The bad qualities of Jordan Baker are she is deceitful, derisive, and contemptuous. Jordan’s good qualities are she is a strong and supportive woman. Fitzgerald developed Jordan Baker throughout The Great Gatsby because she is an example of how people prey on other people for money. In addition, Jordan Baker is important because she represents a new type of woman in her time.…
