What my essay is going to be about is how the economy was back then to how it is now. I’m also going to talk about how "The Great Gatsby" has to relate to The American Dream. I believe that The American Dream includes success, money, and the opportunities that we now have.
In The American Dream I believe that we have to be successful in order to be able to reach The American Dream. In the book, "The Great Gatsby" success is meant by having the biggest houses and nicest cars. Gatsby was very rich so he had a huge house and very fancy things. “Gatsby’s gorgeous car lurched up the rocky drive to my door and gave out a burst of melody from its three-noted horn.” (The book The Great Gatsby page 50) Having success means everything. Now having success in our society is having a lot of money, having expensive cars and expensive things. Also living in a huge house. To be able to be successful now you have to go to school and go to college and get a good paying career. Back then they would just sell or transport illegal …show more content…
things and they would get a whole bunch of money off of it.
Another way to be able to reach The American Dream is to be able to have lots of money and become rich.
In the book, "The Great Gatsby", Gatsby had a whole bunch of money. Gatsby would always throw parties on the weekends. “On the weekends his Rolls-Royce became an omnibus, bearing parties to and from the city between nine in the morning and long past midnight.” (The book The Great Gatsby page 59) In the book The Great Gatsby lived in the rich side and here in our society we have summerlin, which is where the upper class live. Being rich is having a lot of fancy and expensive cars and very expensive clothes. “It makes me sad because I’ve never seen such- such beautiful shirts before.” (The book The Great Gatsby page 68) That’s when Daisy saw Gatsby’s clothes and realized what she could’ve had if she would’ve been with him. Being rich back then meant that you had power and you could've done anything without having to worry
about.
The third way to be able to reach The American Dream is having the great opportunities.Back then people wouldn't have the opportunities that we have now. "The dream itself is ambitious contradictory romantic in nature, and undeniably beautiful white at the same blue grotesquely flawed."(source 1 Fitzgerald rendering of a dream) You have to have ambition to be able to become successful. You have to know how to use the opportunities that are given to you. "No matter what idyllic picture we painted America and all of its promise, underneath the brightest of hues lies the star white canvas of truth."(source 1 Fitzgerald's rendering of a dream) In our society now if you aren't rich you have a lot of opportunities like getting help to pay for school. Back then only the rich would get the privilege to opportunities. In the past young people would have to work to be able to help out their family and now young people they just have to go to school and prepare themselves for college.
The economy has changed a whole lot on how the economy is now and how it was back then, but the book,"The Great Gatsby" helps us understand how it was back then. The way to The American Dream is to be successful, have money and take advantage of the great opportunities that are given to us.
