The Great Gatsby-Achieving the Dream
A man who had a dream of becoming reunited with his true love, Daisy Buchanan, Jay Gatsby was determined to make this dream a reality no matter the trials and tribulations. He achieved all of his goals through hard work and determination with his love for Daisy being the driving force behind his motivation. The title “The Great Gatsby” is very suitable because Gatsby’s power to make his dreams a reality is what makes him “great”.
Gatsby began as James Gatz, a young seventeen year old boy from North Dakota who wanted a life which contradicted his entire existence, one which seemed unattainable. He wanted to become prominent, rich and successful. He was granted this opportunity when he met Dan Cody. He got a chance to taste the life which he so desired. This was why he changed his name to “Jay Gatsby”. It was the official initiation of Jay Gatsby into the world. Within no time, the son of unsuccessful farmers became a potential member of society’s elite. This was his dream in connection with Daisy. He persevered and became what he believed was his destiny. With Dan Cody as his chaperone, he established the foundation of his identity and his new life.
Gatsby’s number one priority in life was to find his true love Daisy and to become reunited with her. His determination for Daisy was what pushed him towards achieving all that he had. He only bought his mansion because it was close by to Daisy’s house. From his house he could have seen the green light that flashed from the dock. This green light was his inspiration. He did all he could to become reunited with Daisy. Everything he did was ultimately for her. He threw lavish parties hoping to find someone who knew her. He befriended her cousin, Nick Carraway, to get closer to her. He didn’t even let the fact that she was married deter him from his dream of getting her back.
Gatsby’s determination to find Daisy was great. The things he did to find her were great as well. They were not exactly honourable or ethical; he lacked morality in the actions he took to reach where he was. However, great things are not always done according to what is right. Gatsby was involved in illegal activities, but these undertakings were very profitable. He and his partner, Meyer Wolfshiem, owned side-street drug stores and were selling grain alcohol over the counter. Gatsby did such things for Daisy. He knew Daisy didn’t want someone who was poor, so he built himself up, mindless of his dishonest deeds.
Upon meeting Daisy after five years, one would think that Gatsby had achieved his dream of reuniting with Daisy. This was not so. Gatsby wanted to pick back up where he left off with Daisy as if they could simply return to how they were five years before. This dream was one that he could not achieve no matter what he did, for Daisy had a husband and more importantly, a child. He tried his level best to make Daisy his and only his by telling her husband, Tom, the truth about his and Daisy’s relationship. Perhaps he would have achieved this dream if not for the fact that he was killed by a bullet which should have been meant for Tom, as it was shot by the husband of Tom’s mistress.
Jay Gatsby’s life was full of great achievements, all inspired and powered by his love for Daisy Buchanan. His greatness was built on immorality, but it was driven by the most pure and sacred emotion, love. His love for her was undeniable, and all he did was for her. This love story ends in tragedy, however the love that Gatsby had for Daisy was what helped him live out his dream as a rich, successful man. He didn’t get to share it with her, but it was inspired by her and he had her in his heart all t hrough his life therefore it can be said that his power, which was his love for Daisy, to make his dreams real made him great.

After meeting him that’s where his wealth started. He was now the man he hoped Daisy would want. He now had money and was able to support her lifestyle. Gatsby grew up as James Gatz in rural North Dakota. When he met his first boss, Dan Cody, he immediately took on the persona of Jay Gatsby. “So he invented just the sort of Jay Gatsby that a seventeen-year-old boy would be likely to invent, and to his conception he was faithful to the end,” (Fitzgerald 98). He was determined to become this image of a man he had fabricated. In pursuit of wealth and achievement, Gatsby attended college in southern Minnesota. He was forced to work as a janitor to pay his tuition. “He stayed there two weeks, dismayed at its ferocious indifference to the drums of his destiny,” (Fitzgerald 99). Gatsby’s pride rendered him incapable of continuing to work his way through school,…

Jay Gatsby is passionately in love with a married woman named Daisy Buchanan, a woman he lost five years before the start of the book. In this novel, Gatsby orders his life around his one desire: to be reunited with Daisy. Gatsby’s mission in this story leads him from poverty to wealth, into Daisy’s arms, and eventually into his death. Gatsby sees Daisy as embodying the past that can be again in the future. He is completely obsessed with returning to the time when he and Daisy fell in love. "He wanted to recover something, some idea of himself perhaps, that had gone into loving Daisy. His life had been confused and disordered since then, but if he could once return to a certain starting place and go over it all slowly, he could find out what that thing was."(117; ch. 6) This clarifies why Gatsby is so desperate to reclaim Daisy and why he is stuck living in the past. In a way, Daisy represents a prize to Gatsby. Acquiring this prize is his dream, his salvation, and eventually it becomes his temperament. This love for Daisy is no longer a harmless attraction to Gatsby. It becomes an unhealthy obsession that completely takes over his life.…

The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald is a romantic tragedy about a man named Nick Carraway who gets involved with the life of Jay Gatsby and his not-so secretive love for Daisy Buchanan. A critic named Lionel Trilling once said, “Jay Gatsby is to be thought of as standing for America itself.” This is proven to be true because Gatsby moves up in life and pursues his dream. Jay Gatsby is one of the most interesting and memorable males in fictional literature, even though he is not a dynamic and changing character during the novel. In fact, Jay Gatsby has changed little since he was a teenager. Born as James Gatz to poor farmers in North Dakota, he decided at an early age that he wanted more out of life than North Dakota could offer. He leaves home to find excitement and wealth. While lounging on the beach one day, he sees a yacht docked off the coast. He borrows a boat and rows out to introduce himself to the owner of the yacht. Dan Cody is an extremely wealthy and wildly extravagant man. He takes a liking to young James Gatz and offers him a job. When the boy boards the boat to become Cody’s assistant and protector, he leaves behind the identity of James Gatz forever; the rest of his life he will be known as Jay Gatsby, an incurable and idealistic romantic who fills his life with dreams.…

Gatsby built a gorgeous house, not for the recognition, not for his pride, but so that he could be that much closer to his one true love. The American Dream is the dream that when one comes to America, they can build themselves a new life in order to become successful and frugal. Gatsby is, at first glance, truly great, for he pursues his dream of Daisy relentlessly. Jordan Baker, in a conversation with Nick Carraway, lets him know that Gatsby wanted to let Daisy know how rich and powerful was; how “he [wanted] her to see his house,” which is extravagant. Gatsby wants to impress Daisy with his newfound wealth in order to bring her back to him. Gatsby is also highly optimistic about achieving his goal, and thinks that he “is going to fix everything just the way it was before.” Gatsby does not want to lose sight of his dream through petty pessimism. Gatsby also has unending loyalty to his goal of pursuing Daisy. When Daisy strikes and hits Myrtle with Gatsby’s car, Gatsby takes the blame for it. He believes that lying for her will help him in his quest to get Daisy to love him. Gatsby is great in his unyielding pursuit for Daisy.…
