The Great Gatsby Color Essay
In his novel “The Great Gatsby”, F. Scott Fitzgerald uses color symbolism in most parts of the novel as character developments. Colors are an important part of the world around us, they can send messages and express emotions, belief that words cannot express. In the novel F. Scott Fitzgerald uses the color yellow as immorality and readers can also see that it stands for corruption. F. Scott Fitzgerald also uses the color gold, which represents wealth in his novel, “The Great Gatsby.” F. Scott Fitzgerald uses the color yellow in his novel to symbolize falsity and corruption of events and/or characters in the novel. The color yellow is to show by imagery that not everything is what it seems. F. Scott Fitzgerald states on page 17, “The lamp light, bright on his boots and dull on the autumn leaf yellow of her hair” The author is referring to Tom and Daisy and he’s saying that Tom is becoming immoral. We’ve seen how immoral Tom is and how he is also becoming. First, tom is having an affair with Myrtle Wilson. Another immoral aspect is the fact that Tom loathes Gatsby. Tom’s hate for Gatsby is so great in the novel, that Tom attempts to prove Gatsby is not whole he says he is. He went as far to hire a detective to aid him prove that about Gatsby. Similarly, the author uses to color yellow as a meaning of corruption. Gatsby’s life was filled with corruption, even though he wanted to be an honorable individual. One Important fact in the novel where yellow symbolized corruption is the fact that Gatsby drove a yellow Rolls-Royce, the same car that caused Myrtle’s death. Gatsby corrupt world made him attempt anything that brings him Daisy. Gatsby was not the only who the author corrupted with the color yellow.
