When Nick meets Gatsby, he is ‘leaning…heavy with dejection or sleep’. It is clear that Gatsby has had a similar night to Nick. The upright posture and finesse he has had in many of the other chapters has disappeared and he seems to have withered. This is another ominous sign as this description of Gatsby shows that the hope that Gatsby always seemed to hold onto has slowly been diminished. Gatsby re-tells the events of last night after nick had left and says ‘she came to the window…and then turned out the light’. This is another ominous sign as it seems as if because of…

Nick escorted Daisy into his residence only to discover Gatsby was not in the living room. Nick did not need to wonder long because “there was a light dignified knocking at the front door… Gatsby, pale as death, with his hands plunged like weights in his coat pockets, was standing in a puddle of water glaring tragically into my eyes” (86). The purpose of his action was to deceive Daisy and make her believe he was not waiting for her. While an innocent lie, it is already giving a dishonest start to the reunion between Jay Gatsby and…

He pushed his way to the top. This was the American Dream to get rich and to be happy. Gatsby betrayed his old life and became someone who was not him. He really believed that if he could make all this money and become rich he could get his girl of his dreams. He lets Daisy believe that he had the money, “He had deliberately given Daisy a sense of security; he let her believe that he was a person from much the same stratum, as herself.” (149) Daisy wouldn’t betray her secure life with Tom for Gatsby. That's what Gatsby did not get, that Daisy is never going to leave her security and the money that she knew where it came from. It’s sad how Gatsby had to make up this other persona to get someone to liked him. What he didn’t know was that when he became this new person is that he betrayed his family and himself. He knew that if he didn’t do all of this stuff he would have never gotten Daisy. The only people that were to his funeral was his dad and Nick. They were the ones that did not betray Gatsby. This just shows who really cared about Gatsby. Even though Gatsby died they came to his funeral. Nick was the one Gatsby trusted the most and he was there. Nick, for instance, had broken mentally. When they would talk amongst themselves, Nick would learn more about how to reach a goal because of the strong enunciative Gatsby had for anything set for himself; to Nick, Gatsby was the icon or image of the word hope. "Reserving judgments is a matter infinite hope."- (Nick Carraway pg.15) Hope was more than just a word; it was ambition to strive for the American Dream. When realizing that the death of his friend was real, he had lost hope. Nick would have benefited greatly from his friend not being murdered in cold blood. Nick was Gatsby’s only true friend and he would have inherited some of Gatsby’s money or even his house from the stong and surreal relationship they had. Daisy disappearing after Gatsby's death changed Nick as well because she was a person that he could go to for help. Nick would of been more prosperous and mentally stable if Gatsby had lived, and if Daisy had stayed in his life.…

At first, Nick states, "I didn't want to hear it and I avoided him when I got off the train." (Page 181) This statement refers to a taxi driver who told numerous stories pertaining to Gatsby. This quotation implies that Nick is tired of hearing the same old stories about the great Gatsby. Many of which are false and most of which superficial in thought and have no basis. Nick wants to move on instead of brooding over the past and he wants to forget about Gatsby's existence.…

One of the main obvious reasons that connect Nick and Gatsby is Nick's cousin Daisy. We learn that the reason why Gatsby first made contact with Nick was due to his relation to Daisy. This suggests that Gatsby is merely using Nick to get close to Daisy once again and that he possibly doesn't care about his 'friendship' with Nick. This is further supported when Gatsby announces to Nick that he has a 'big request of you today' implying that all he wanted was for Nick to reintroduce him to Daisy. It could be argued that if this were true, Nick had knowledge that his relationship with Gatsby was not genuine and that he was playing it to his advantage to. When Nick first mentions Gatsby in the opening pages of the book he describes Gatsby as someone with 'an extraordinary gift for hope'. Gatsby's actions are implied to be solely focused on his reunion with Daisy, supported by the symbolism of the green light at the end of her dock - The green light represented everything Gatsby desired and hoped for, his own American Dream. It can therefore be argued that Nick has at least some inclination of Gatsby's aims and plays along to help his own goal of learning the truth behind 'Gatsby'.…

When Nick leaves Gatsby alone when he obviously needs Nicks help, Gatsby gets murdered. “It was after we started with Gatsby toward the house that the gardener saw Wilson’s body a little way of in the grass, and the holocaust was complete.” (Fitzgerald 162). This was the description of Gatsby’s death after he was shot and killed at his house. There was no protection at the house and he was not with anyone except his butler, because Nick had left him there when he needed his help. Nick also is hurt by Gatsby’s actions because he can no longer see his cousin and college friend anymore. “But she and Tom had gone away early that afternoon, and taken baggage with them.” (Fitzgerald 164). All because Gatsby used Nick to get close to Daisy, he ended up dead and Nick could no longer spend time with his cousin or college friend…

Throughout the book, Nick Carraway, has always been the character of stability. Unlike Gatsby, Daisy and Tom, Nick does not regularly dwell on the past. He is a man of present mind; he believes in making the most from what he is given; his personality demonstrated his belief of living in the present. His level headedness and constant persistence was a huge support that Gatsby heavily relied on. It was hinted throughout the text that Nick is a man of thought and words, however “after Gatsbys death the East was haunted for [him] like that, distorted beyond [his] eyes’ power of correction”. After Gatsbys’ death, Nick begins to regress on the past. He becomes deeper and deeper absorbed in…

While the wealthy and privileged retreated to their opulent lives Nick remains behind to send Gatsby on his final journey to the grave. F. Scott Fitzgerald concludes the Great Gatsby with the death of Gatsby himself. Nick’s narration ends with him moving back to the Midwest after the shocking events that had happened in New York. “Tomorrow we will run faster, stretch out our arms further”. Due to the difference of the novelistic focus to the cinematic camera angles, each recount of Gatsby’s death scene comes from a strikingly different point of view. In the novel, Nick’s continual assertion of his own beliefs maintains the audience’s interest in his opinions rather than Gatsby himself. While delineating the scene of the crime, Nick interjects that he “firmly [believes]” that Gatsby’s servants “knew [about the bodies] by then.” Fitzgerald, in turn, assures that it is clear exactly whose life The Great Gatsby depicts. On the other hand, Wilson clearly narrates the 1974 death scene through his facial expressions and audible gasping. Unlike Luhrmann’s version, where the camera’s angle of Gatsby’s body poignantly blocks Wilson’s face…
